so I got back on my back after about a 2 month break from my bike. Ran great but after spinning the bike and almost dropping it I realized I was dumping primary fluid. It blew all over my rear rotor, tire, and fender. So I. Dumping primary fluid and it's missing in 3rd gear. Anyone have any ideas. Any help is much appreciated.

No idea where it's coming from? If not, I would try to clean it up and get some idea and then post up the results.

I'm not clear on the third gear comment, you mean the motor is missing or you can't get it third gear?

Thanks for the reply, yeah in third gear it feels like the chain slips or something. If I'm coasting in third it doesn't happen. It's only "missing" or "slipping" when I give it gas/accelerate.

not sure where the oil is coming from yet but I will let you know as soon as I can narrow down the leak spots

As far as the leak goes, one thing to check is your starter. There's a hole on bottom if your looking at starter from left side. These leak all the time until they are fixed properly.

If you can't visibly see where it's leaking I would check the primary plug , the derby cover gasket, inspection cover gasket and if needed pull the primary and check the gasket. Still no visible leaks could be starter

First find and fix the leak. It would seem your clutch may be starting to slip and needs adjustment. Just my .02

Thanks for the advice on probably leak spots. I'll check it today. The slipping could be the final drive or clutch slipping. Would either of those explain the slip only in third gear?

Chris If its slips only in third gear does it slips under load in higher gears? Start from scratch check trany THEN engine oil THEN primary oil levels first. If any of your boxes are low or over full then report back. Not sure where it leaks? Lay some paper towels under bike over night this might give you clue where to start looking.Do you have a vent on the inside primary cover? Could be a simple fix like they said above post by checking free play on clutch pack!

Ok hers what I've found. The leak is coming from the overflow tube coming off the starter. The weird part is my tranny and primary are dumping there. It's looks like I've got red fluid (tranny) in my primary case as I just took off the primary cover to get a good look. Could this be from that hole below where the starter enters the primary case? And why is it pumping it out the overflow? Thanks for the help so far fellas. Don't know what I'd do without you guys.

Sounds like your trans main shaft seal is bad and allowing fluid to transfer, also could be worn trans bearing also...

First, there is not an overflow tube on the starter. The drain tube is off the trans.
Second the starter is bolted to the inner primary, not in between the primary and the trans, so it cannot allow cross talk between trans and primary. You can only have primary fluid leak into the starter, then it can leak out of starter. Not criticizing, just clarifying the facts.

You can have fluid cross talk between trans and primary. This is controlled by the trans seal. As mentioned, the bearings in the trans are prone to wear and cause movement in the main shaft, which can/will cause the seals to fail.

Best way to verify this is too loosen and remove final drive belt, loosen the primary chain and then try to axially move the main shaft in/out. If there is ANY movement then i recommend have the bearings/seals replaced.

That would make since. A few years back I had issues with loosing clutch pressure and it turned out that the nut on the main shaft had loosened and depending on the vibration and direction I turned it would slide in and out changing my clutch pressure in the grip. I fixed that I would imagine the extra movement of the shaft probably wore out the bearings/seals. I've also had to adjust the rear tire alignment a couple of times to keep it straight and off the final drive belt. Probably didn't help things either. Is changing out the bearings/seal something you could walk me through? I haven't had a lot of luck trying to get help at a Harley dealership and I like to do my own work.

I,ve honestly never done it. I ended up sending mine to Baker, cost me about a grand because they replaced main shaft and a few other parts. They will rebuild it for $1200 standard cost, including main shaft. Andrew Barnes also does them.

My clutch hub nut and final drive pulley both came loose, which contributes if not cause the main shaft to deflect and go out of round.

I think with some research, it is doable. Most of the bearing are pressed on, so you would need a press and the fixtures. Also, need a way to measure mainshaft runout, and have a keen eye to inspect excessive wear, markings etc on all the components.
