WHEN MY BIKE WAS DELIVERED AT THE DEALERSHIP IS WAS POURING RAIN. NONE THE LESS I WAS ALL SMILES AND OFF AND ROLLING. I GOT PAST THE POINT OF NO RETURN BEFORE I REALIZED THE SPEEDO WAS'NT WORKING. I FIGURED IT MAY BE THE RAIN OR WORST CASE I WOULD TAKE IT IN WHEN I GET A CHANCE. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER TWICE NOW AND IT STILL FAILS TO WORK EVERY TIME. UPON INITIAL START UP IT VERY RARELY WORKS, I CAN RUN IT FOR A WHILE SHUT IT OFF, CYCLE THE SWITCH( AND YES WAIT FOR IT TO SWEEP AND INITIALIZE) SOMETIMES IT WILL WORK SOMETIMES IT WONT. THE FIRST TIME THE DEALER HAD IT THEY CLAIMED LOW VOLTAGE WAS THE CAUSE. I USE A TENDER WHEN IM NOT ON IT BUT THEY HAD IT FOR 3 WEEKS THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT IN. I HAD BEEN OUT OF TOWN AND TOLD THEM NO RUSH FOR THE SERVICE AND A COUPLE OF WARRANTY ISSUES. THEY CHARGED THE BATTERY ONCE THEY STARTED THE WORK AND SAID THEY COULD NOT GET IT TO FAIL. I PICKED IT UP THREE HOURS AFTER THEY GAVE ME THE WORD THAT IS WAS DONE, SPEEDO DOESNT WORK. JUST LAST WEEK TOOK IT IT FOR RECALL AND TOLD THE SPEEDO DOESNT, HASNT ISNT WORKING CORRECTLY, THEY TELL ME THEY DOWNLOADED SOME NEW SOFTWARE TO THE ECH AND REPLACED THE SPEED SENSOR.(DOESNT LOOK LIKE ITS A NEW ONE) THEY SAY PROBLEM SOLVED. THAT WAS FRIDAY, PICKED UP ON SATURDAY MORNING WENT TO LEAVE PARKING LOT, SPEEDO STILL DOESNT WORK. I RUN THREE MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD, STOP FOR GAS, FIRE IT UP, SPEEDO WORKS, SUNDAY MORNING TAKE HER OUT, NO GOOD! DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS? I THINK WITH IT WORKING INTERMITANTLY IT MAY BE THE GAUGE IT SELF. TOSS OUT SOME IDEAS, MABYE SOMETHING I CAN CHECK MYSELF. I KNOW YOU CAN TEST THE SENSORS WITH A MULTIMETER BUT I DONT KNOW THE TOLERANCES.
THANKS, MIKE

First off, welcome! We've all experienced the speedo issues, there are several recalls for mounts, the whole thing etc. etc. I'd not go messing with it yourself though, make them fix it. Also, do a search for the Big Dog customer service number on this site (it's in a mess of threads) and give them a call directly. You bought a great bike and it is backed by a great company. It'll get fixed, I know it's frustrating, but give them a call. They'll call the dealer and "read them their rights" if they have to.

Ride safe.

First Welcome to the forum and please get up the pics, pin the map and go into introduction and let us know about yourself.

On the speedometer issues, there has been some problems with them as you may have read on here. That said what exactly is it doing anyway. I may have missed it but just gathered it wasn't working.

Is it going dead with no reading, is it the tack lights or other lights doing strange things, needle all over the place?

You mentioned that you picked it up in parking lot and it didn't work and then ran a few miles down road and still had problems. Not sure what to tell you, but if you are getting things like, that-may be best to pull right back in to dealers while it not working, leave bike running and have them drag mechanic out to get first hand look at situation.

Recommend working with dealer still and nailing it down. If dealer can not get it nailed, call BDM CS as Proflyer recommended.

When you get a chance try to to give some specifics of what it is doing and myself or other may be able to give you some more focused pointers.

I would also be very attentative to not leaving the dealer anytime you pick something up from them and it is not working out in parking lot or within a few miles. Get it back right away and pull them out to see it for themselves if you get in situation like that.

Welcome again and hopefully it will be taken care of shortly and you will be Fat Happy Big Dog Rider. Safe Riding

Welcome, some may say its rude to come in bitchin without at least a hello/intro thread.

And for God's sake...

On the speedo... tehy say they downloaded the EHC update. When you turn the bike on, the speedo does its sweep. Does it sweep again when you push run? If not then the EHC software was improperly installed.

Most of the time your problems with your dog stem from the dealer, not BDM directly.

Is your bike still under warrenty? If so take it back to them.If not then try to remove the chopper sensor on top of the trany. check and clean metal shavings from the magnet then reinstall it.

If you're going to american biker, I have never been happy about the customer service in that shop.

K-9Mike,

Nice bike first off, love the Pin-up Nose Art. On the speedo, your problems are very strange to say the least. Can not say I have seen too many with that situation, but I am sure if there is, someone will post here soon.

From the sounds of it, my first guess is there is a short or bad connection somewhere, possibly a pinched wire going to where it enters in to the back of speedo. Does the tach lights work BTW?

You may want to also check the harness where it connects up to the speedo wiring pigtail. If I read right, the speedo has not been replaced just worked on. Is that correct? More leaning towards a bad wire in the speedo pigtail if it has not been. If it was then check the wiring harness real close.

What may be occuring is that there is very weak connection that is barely there and when cold the contraction may be just enough to break the circuit, and has it heats up, theexpansion makes it. The same could be with the vibrations causing it to make circuit.

Just my guess, but I have seen little wires do similar crap that it was barely broken and heat and/or movement completed the circuit until it change (such as getting cold or vibrating open again.

Just my 2 cents and maybe more knowledgeable people will pipe end. That said, based on what I can gather from your posting, I would have them look seriously into replacing the harness, or at bare minimal run a complete and through continuity test of ever wire in that harness and include moving them around while you or they do it.

Good luck and once again welcome and nice looking bike.

in reference to american biker, im not here to smear anyone but i have 2 buddies with bikes there now. one having a clutch replaced and he now has to get his tank repainted due to carelessness and the other went in for a ignition module replacement on his grandeur bobber and sometime while sitting in the shop his mirror jumped off his bike on to the floor. no one saw it but they say thats what must have happened because one minute it was on the bike and the next it was on the floor with the stem snapped off and a big gouge in the side.

back to mine.. the tach does as always has worked. the speedo has not been replaced at all. so far i've gotten a full battert charge and a speedo sensor( possibly ) replaced. the broken wire theory makes a lot of sense to me.

i also just went to the garage and checked when i cycle on the key the speedo sweeps, i push run and it does not sweep again.

K-9Mike,

Sorry to hear about yours buddies and the issues with their bikes. Of course we all know that those damn mirrors tend to like to dance around when no one is watching!!!!

Anyway, on the wiring, you could check them yourself if you are cofident with doing so. I would break the harness apart at the speedo pigtail and then the componets at the far end (maybe mark the wiring to get them back right). Get you mulitmeter and some electronic probs (the little bitty pins that are used in small circuits) and start with one wire at a time, check the continuity from one end to the next, wiggle the wire around and watch the meter (or if you have a sound for continuity just listen-I like to see the numbers of ohms myself). See if it shows a good circuit or bad or if it changes greatly as it move around (may be very minor like at most-that is why the audiable indicator works good).

If everything checks fine, put some di-electric grease on the connectors and reassemble. Then time to look at the speedo and the sensor. The testing of them is not something you would be able to do at the home and would require bench testing with the right specification and tools.

If one or the other appears to be the likely culprit and they have changed the sensor, see if that got a wreck bike with a good speedo that you could use and change out to see if it makes difference. If so they can order a new one and get it taken care of, if not scratch their heads, talk among one another and then call Ohmster at BD and get it taken care of.

Good luck and keep us informed.

I would get your EHC flashed first. Most of the shops still don't know how to do it so if you can hook up the BDM trucks at one of the larger rallies they can do it for you. They did hundreds in Daytona.

I would also pull all the wiring connectors fill with die-electric grease and put back together ensuring a strong contact.

Also, read this and ensure this has been checked.

Good man there Ray,

Hell I forgot all about the charts that my Irish Bud Sul got us. It should point him in the right directions.

WELCOME.. :hi: Oops.. sorry:roll:

Welcome to the pound :hi: Sorry to hear of your troubles. and the damage to your buddy's scoots..  First off I'd be finding a new dealer..
I had my ehc replaced in January due to the mounting bolts tore out of the case. for what it's worth I just went out and cycled my key and the speedo cycled, hit run and it did not recycle. but I'm not sure if they updated it with any new software  and i have not had any speedo issues.. I would call BDM here is a customer service # 316-219-7040 as stated earlier they might jump on the dealer to fix it right.. Good luck..

mine doesn't recycle and it just got out of the shop. Runs great. You sure it's supposed to cycle AFTER it does it once and you hit the run button? I've never seen that gas.....
