06 K9 Speedometer Help!

I got a problem with the speedo and odometer on my K9. Was riding it Thursday everything was working fine, looked down and speedo was stuck on 80 mph and odometer / trip meter were not working. Speedo would jump around slightly from 80 to 70 up to 90 etc. when I turned off bike it stayed stuck, turned bike back on and no sweep, started fine, runs fine. So had Rock Fest 2013 party to go to the weekend, left Friday no sweep, speedo still not working now stuck all the way over past 120, no odo/trip meter, backlight not working. Neutral, oil, high beam and directional light indicators all work and tach works fine. Does anyone have any thoughts? Read a bunch of threads and have found nothing pertaining to my issue directly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No sweep could be no proper power/ground connection.

You need to check the three wires that feed the power/ground and signal to the speedo head. The connection may be bad in the head or at the EHC connection. Sounds like a power or ground connection problem more than signal.

The tach and indicator LEDs are powered via a different wire, that's why they are working. Get a wiring diagram and study it.

Thanks I will do that as soon as i can. Could the issue be with the sensor on the transmission? Transmission was out of it and repaired.

Bro1, I have one question I thought of. If the power or ground connections are bad, wouldn't the speedo needle drop back down to 0?Or does it just stay where it was when power connection was first lost? My speedo is stuck past 120 now touching the odometer reset button.

Those are stepper motor driven type speedos and the needle will stay where it was last positioned when the power is removed.

Most likely the speedo needle will reset back to zero when the power is applied if nothing else is wrong.

go to the how to section, and look at the how to replace speedo face - this will help you with taking speedo apart. you will have to totally take the speedo apart and in the back in most cases you will find one or more wires with the solider broken ( there are three wires total) - but most the time because of how the wires are being held in they touch sometimes and work. this has happened several times on me - but I have alway been able to fix. I would try and re-solider all three wire while you are in there. I am in southeast PA., not sure were you are but if you need more help let me no. Bruce

Thanks Bruce. I will try that. I've been real busy at work and have not had time to look at it much yet. Checked wires by EHC they seem to be fine. Was attempting to work my way backwards from EHC and trans to speedo head. I live in North East Central Pa, near Bucknell Univ. kind of near Williamsport Pa. I will remove speedo first and work that way down to EHC. Thanks

Bruce I just removed the speedo, its cracked. I attached a picture of it. Could this be where the problems stems from. I'm thinking I need to buy a Digital Dakota, but still not sure if this is the problem or do I still have an issue somewhere else.

So yesterday I tested the wires from EHC to speedo. put volt meter on red and black with key on and had voltage. This evening I took the speedo and put a sewing needle in the black and red ports of the connector and checked for continuity. I got nothing, so I must assume that the speedo is no good.

Ironhorse, I just ordered my Dakota Digital from Mad Dog and installed it today. It worked like a charm and to replace it is very simple. The only pain in the ass was screwing the two screws back into to the housing. The manual is easy to follow on doing it yourself.

FYI, this will be my third speedometer and I vowed not to go back to Big Dog. Everything you said in this thread has happened to me. Big Dog made a shit spedo that was not properly sealed, becuase when you get caught in the rain, you will have condensation build up in your spedo which tells you water got in their. Anyway go with Dakota Digital or any other recommended brand execpt Big Dog.
