06 K9-Compensator bad?

Hey guys,

Decided to do some work on the dog today and pushed the bike forward as I thought it was in N. Moved forward about 3 'klunks' (from the primary side/front by the motor.) It caught then like normal in 1st. Pulled the bike back and the same 3 klunks then it catches...btw the bike rides just fine. It also makes a rolling/clunking noise when it's idling (had to bend down to hear it, never noticed before). Oh does this in every gear so it's not in the tranny.

So, I pulled the primary. I put a new clutch in 1000 miles ago and the light blue primary fluid I used came out dark dark grey. The drain plug magnet is loaded with very fine shavings. NO big shavings can be found or parts (like a part of a spring or something). Anyway, the whole clutch side looks great. Nut is exactly where I marked it when I changed it all out (as we all know they back off). Motor side nut is tight and doesn't look like its worked off at all (checked it then too). I put a ratchet to the motor nut and I can turn it the same 3 klunk sounding turns each way before it catches.

Bad compensator? From what I've been searching and reading, I think so, just don't want to go replacing good parts.

Thanks all, and since it's my bday if anyone wants to send over an open belt drive I'd appreciate it :2thumbs:

Errrr aaahhh HAPPY B-DAY..

Sorry no belt.....

Gray primary oil is fairly common. My guess o meter says it sounds like it just may be your compensator.

Happy B-day. Neither my 05 or 08 had a compensator style spocket. Just had a standard spline spocket on the engine shaft. Didn' think they started compensators till later, on the right side drive until in the 09's or later.

Let me know if dis be wrong.

Happy Birthday. My 08 didn't have a compensator sprocket, I haven't broken into my 05 yet, so I don't know on that one...

No compensator...just a plain old sprocket. I took it all off and the stator was totally gummed up from the fAcking morons at bikers dream that put gear oil in the primary...found that when I drained it last winter for the clutch. Anyway, got it pulled off and all cleaned out and the noise quit. There was so much gunk built up that it was rubbing on the stator and making a clicking type of noise. Not sure how, but a good scrub with brake clean and it quit.

Anyway...maybe it'll charge better now!

Glad I found it before it caused any real issues. Is there such a thing as too much red locktite on the nut?? Torqued to 175ish...wrench goes to 150 and I put a little extra from there.
