06 117 motor

I have an 06 k9 and have some questions. I've been reading as much as I can about 117 posts, but want clarity on somethings. Okay it seems like the 107 was more powerful and the 111 from ironhorse is too. Why? What is restricting the 117? Is there something that needs to be removed like a restrictor plate? I'm really new at all of this, but I would think that the 117 would be able to over power the others. What's to be done without dumping Alot of money in it? From what I been reading I'm gonna put a 585 cam in it and get a tune, but that's really all I wanna do. Imma have Brian in beecher do the tune.. I have a spike air cleaner on it and just put twisted sister exhaust and a oil cooler on it, but it seems to be lacking power to me. Hopefully after the cam and tune it'll be better. Forgive me for dragging this out. But any and all feedback is much appreciated on anything I mentioned.

how many bolts in your rocker boxes?? 6 in each is S&S topend...4 in each box is TP ...also check your carb size...on the side it will say E series or G series... the e will have restrictors from BD...the G is the bigger carb...you might also get the serial number off your engine and call S&S and see what your specs are on motor....

Tinker with it and you will end up with a tinker toy.
Personal experience
you want more power trade out the motor to a 124 or 128 and make up some of the differnece by selling the 117.

if you go with the 585, would be money well spent to get rid of the spike and go with the proven S&S dual runner and get the carb triple X'ed.

In my opinion after cams , springs , exhaust, pipes, air cleaner ,wires plus, etc , personally I'd leave it alone , after all iv spent, I can get to the next stop what 2 seconds faster ,, it just creates more issues ,, my 2 cents

Maybe I'm just getting too old, but what is the big infatuation with making our bikes rocket ships. Hell, I'm on it to cruise, not rip my helmet off. Plus it's much less expensive and much less time consuming to leave it as the manufacturer created it. Spend the money on a nice jacket, some bags or other accessories and just enjoy the ride - these bikes are plenty fast stock.

X3 - I have even considered selling my Daytona 675.

Horsepower buys parts....Torque wins race

With my Street Glide, I built the motor in it because we do quite a bit of touring and 95% of the time, the bike is 2-up. I am so glad I had the HD 103 built to the 113. Loaded down with luggage for 2 as well as both of us, I appreciate the extra power that is there to pull the mountains and the load.

Solo around home....its scary ;-)

Leaving the Dog's 117 alone...

i had my 07 Bulldog 117 efi dynoed for the hell of it and it came back with just under a hundred hp 99.76 and 108 on the torque(for what that is worth). For awhile, I was on the fence about the 585 cam but decided to leave it stock except for the exhaust. As some have said, it is plenty fast for me and the posted speeds in Va are tapped out at 70 mph:D

Always tinkering is part of the culture and American male DNA (with more and more woman also doing the same).

That said as the ole saying goes, gain something-loose something.
The more you mess with it and take it away from stock, the more chance is you loose liability, Benjamens' out fo the old wallet, for very little gain in the real world.

The stock 117 is more than plenty and going with a 585 is not a bad idea, simple and overall one of the better mods, as long as it encompanied with the proper tuning and set up. Puttting the pointing cool looking air intake, is likley to created more frustration that benefit, lot more issues tuning, concerns with water intrusion, cost, etc.

Going with the twisted sister exhaust, does it really gain the performance you are seeking for practicle purpose? For most real world riding a good two into one is better option. Many of the exhaust systems have no real engineering into them and designed around cool factor verse practicle factor.

All said though, it is the nature of the beast, but if you are looking for realibilty, less frustration, better sense that you can get on it and ride cross country without issue, best to leave it near stock.

If you do go with mods, just keep in mind the saying, gain something loose something. Willing to deal with loss for whatever gains, not an issue!

True if u tinker with an existing engine e.t.c.
But in this case it does.

Talked to Brian at valley racing today. I've decided to stand firm on the 585 cam and have Brian tune it. I originally bought the twisted sister exhaust cause I really like the way they look...so imma keep that. I really liked the look of the oil cooler too so I added that. Those are some of the cosmetic must haves for me. I'm just trying to create the bike how I want it. The cam I hear will give it some oomph, and a different sound without altering the motor too much. But I gotta tell u guys part of the fun is adding your own desires into your toys whether a car, bike, boat etc. I'm glad to hear everyone's opinions, it makes for good conversations.

There's no replacement for displacement but there's always ways to make it run stronger. but im happy with my stock 117 it run's good enough for me.

Here is my .02.
Going all out can get expensive and even it done right can lead to reliability problems.
I do however see it as a good idea to de-EPA it.
By putting the specs back to where they were designed to be can add power without sacrificing reliability.

I was under the impression that S&S intended the 117" to use the 585 cam but BDM had to de-tune the motors to meet emissions, which is why they went with a smaller cam.
