05 Pitbull what to look at?

Energy One

Ok the short story. My neighbor up the street saw my bike and I guess he decided he needs one.:whoop::whoop::whoop:
He wants me to go look at an 05 Pitbull with 107ss 3500 miles.
What specific things should I look at besides the obvious?
The pics I saw had VH pipes.
I'll ask the seller what was done but I'd rather show up knowing what to look at for problems/recall/ect?
05 was the restrictor plate year right?

I believe he is asking $11,500ish. Seems fair if it is a clean piece right?
Help me out so I don't look like a tool.:lol:

Well the first thing would be the engine 05 did not have a 107. They all had a 117. If stock will be a E carb and restirictors may or may not have been removed. Some early clutch baskets were crack prone and many have up dated with the bandit clutch. Listen for any excesive valvetrain noise as the 05 had the TP rocker boxes. Handle bar switches had a recall. If this was done they should have the same feel or click as your bike. Also a recall on the headlight plug, and the starters had a o-ring recall, and their was a recall on the voltage regultor. check to see if the bike has a circuit breaker or a fuse. The fuse assembly was the recall fix. Make sure the top motor mount bolt is there as well they had a tendency to come loose and fall out. And if the seller doesn't object I would hook up a meter to make sure the system is charging. Also but gas caps are active. The one on the left has left hand threads. Right side is right hand threaded. ON the right hand gas cap there may be a white breather vent. If this is there take it out and smash it with a hammer. (Its a EPA thing and many have caused vapor lock on the gas tank)

Then after he buys it go over everthing checking for tightness on the bolts or wear. And buy a fresh HD AGM battery and make sure they hook it up to a battery tender.

Thats all i can think of right off but I'm sure I've missed the obvious.

not really part of the mech.s, but look at the tires for dry rot. could use as a negotiating point. check the oil lines for rubbing.

Take a test ride, ask what recalls have been performed, ask about maintenance practices. Other than what V mentioned, I think you're covered...

look at the EHC and see if it has a round plug or a USB plug coming out of it. USB is the newer updated one. doesn't mean it is going to last but at least it has been serviced.

You nailed it... 05 wasn't a great year for big dogs in my opinion. Unless all this bullshit has been done, I'd opt for an 06 or newer.....

Thank you. I will make sure I look at all this stuff.
I was told it a 2005 107motor left side drive 280 rear tire.
Would that make it an 04?

Mine is an '05 Pitbull RHD 300 tire with 117 motor, as all Bigdogs were. I have no problems with mine, I bought last Nov with 2700 miles. Mine does have the Wire Plus instead of the trouble prone EHC.

The only issues I have and they are small ones: Top Motor Mount bolt was out, I replaced and used red loctite, but still works it's self loose, also a small oil like under the inner primary, which new o rings should fix. I got mine for 10,500 then added V&H 2+2, the SS Dual Runner, Jets etc

I am sorry guys. Turns out It is a 2004 pitbull.
So now the question is what to look at on the 2004 not 2005.
Thanks!!!

I got an 04 pound puppy. Check all the above. I've had to deal with all the usual signs of abuse. Take out, ride it, use your best judgement, no matter how close you go over it, I bet you'll miss something. But its a USED bike. You have to expect some issues. Make sure your neighbor knows how to turn a wrench...... FWIW, I havent' had anything real serious go wrong. Got a squeal I haven't quite tracked down, but don't think its a major. Just my :zz2cents:

I have explained to my neighbor that he will need to turn wrenches.
I am just trying to help him pick a good one that he wants within his budget.
He looked at a borgete with 30,000 miles on it but he said it was to long.
He also looked at an AIH. He really seems to want the dog. I am just trying to educate him so he can make an informed decision.

Well we went to look at it and I took it for a 20 min ride. It was in good shape. It had some nice work done to it and ran well. He bought it for 11,500.
Thank for the help and input.
Both gas caps screw out with the paint savers. I will have to fix that for him.
I gave him the forum address. Hopefully he will join in and do some reading.
