05 Chopper ~ Valve guides oval’d – NOT COVERED (HELP)

05 Chopper ~ Valve guides oval’d – NOT COVERED (HELP)

My 05 Chopper developed a tick in the front head. I went through the motions and researched it here, contacted the dealer. My bike is an 05 but was purchased in late 04 and I am told is out of warranty. I have 4200 miles on it, I am not the original owner. At the urging of the dealer I pulled the heads and brought them in. They pulled the springs and valves in front of me and sure enough both exhaust valves (front and rear) showed severe ovaling.

The dealer contacted Big Dog to see if there was anyway to support a factory based swap as this seems not uncommon with the TP rocker boxes. The answer was no.

Now I’m pissed that this seems to be a known issue, as the TP’s are replaced with S&S rocker boxes if this same situation is found under warranty. Seems to me that incompatible components were used, I can understand it happening. Hell it happens to me in my profession, all possible research is done and the conclusion to use the components is reached and assembly or run time proves the research wrong.

Question: Does anyone know of another route to seek some factory support on this issue?

(rant on)
I’m frustrated by not having premium manufacturing ethics behind a product that uses premium status as a selling point, and a product that carries a premium price tag. This is by far not the end of my voicing my dissatisfaction on this matter, but it is the end here. I’m sure Big Dog will have a trailer or booth at Bike’toberfest in Vegas, the phrase “How do ya like me now” comes to mind when I think of visiting them.
(rant off)

Now I’m Irish and stubborn to a fault, so maybe I’m just throwing more money into this bike and I should be looking to walk away. ( NOT GONNA HAPPEN ) I’ll muddle through all the issues, because I do love it.

So where do I go from here assuming no factory love.

I’ve read the adding compression thread, got it. I guess I also want to drop a .600 cam in it. Of course match the springs. I’m also kind leaning on changing the valve size back to the true S&S variety, I know less about this, I’ve only seen one thread so far.

So in a concise list I’m looking to:

1) Head rework to repair valve guides
2) .600 cam
3) Zero the deck ( 10.5:1 target )
4) Valve springs
5) Valve sizing changed
6) Change TP to S&S rocker boxes
7) Hone cylinders
8) Replace rings

Question: Am I missing something I should consider at this time?
Question: Based on all the work to the heads, should I price a new set from S&S?
Question: Are there rocker box options that I should make sure I get?
Question: What machine shop / Engine builder in the southwest should I call?

Thanks for all the effort in the things I’ve read and learned from so far, and thanks in advance for your feedback on this.

I also have the weak guides on my 05'. My local dealer here in Tulsa has a trade out program. Bring in your old heads and they swap you for a ported and polished set with new guides, valves and springs for $1000. Not sure I want to go that route yet but I wil watch this thread. Good luck!

yeah bdm is known for using shit products, then changing them out to better products, and not even making the changes on other peoples bikes. they would rather wait till its outa warranty then they have an excuse to save money.... good luck and from what you have planned to do to your engine looks like your going in the right direction, then your motor will run like a real motor should..

Another round please
Its easy to pile on BDM, but the fact is, its out of warrentee, almost 4 yrs old. BDM stands behind them better than most. Yelling at them gets you nowhere. Try getting a out of warrentee repair done on what your drive, it will never happen. My suburban had the battery melt down, dealer said it happens to all of them, but said I must pay for it. Thats the real world. These bikes didn't say lifetime, 5 year, or whatever. By the way, I will be in vegas too. Lets have a beer.

mayhem the things you list are pretty much spot on - get the motor to as close as you can to what it would be if bought straight from S&S and you can't go wrong.

Before shelling out for a new cam make sure you find out for sure what cam you already have - it might be a 600.

and don't worry to much about BDM - your bike is a few years old now so you will probably have to put your hand in your pocket but it will be well worth it. You should also upgrade your clutch and check the VR thread too - you probably have one of the bad ones - my advice would be to change it for a compufire.

good luck.

Hell I had an extended warranty and found out that only the ones written AFTER 2005 covered the EHC. Thank you .... and here is my $700.00 ! But bottom line is that it was not covered. I'm going to swap the electrical system this winter for the standard 12v and basically have a "normal" chopper ... with that bad ass Big Dog look.

Well in the past month I have noticed that I have an excessive tick in my rear head and have tried adjusting the valves @ 3 1/2 turns and at 4 and found no change in the tick... So it looks like i may have the same problem.... Luckily i do have the extended warranty and will take it in in a few weeks... Just wonder if they are still swapping the TP rocker boxes out for the S&S. We shall see when the weather turns colder..

I have an 06 Pitbull that i took in for that annoying ticking sound and they replaced the heads, rocker boxes, valves etc under warranty.... Had i waited a few more weeks the bike would of been out of warranty and i would of been up shits creek without a paddle. The service center i took it to does a great job getting things covered under BDM warranty. But they did also tell me that every bike they have had in there with TP rocker boxes were a problem and that BDM will replace them if you complain enough. So my suggestion to anyone that still has warranty left and you have the TP rocker boxes then you should get that scoot into the shop and get it handled.

Well i dropped the Dog off at the Vet on Saturday "Beezers" We will see how the extended warranty will deal with the valve guide issue and TP boxes..
Looks like Mine and BigHouse's dog will be keeping each other company.

I have the TP rockers and my warranty expired in April. Starting to hear louder ticking noise. I have 9500 miles on my K9. Going to take it to the dealer in a few weeks. I wonder how much its going to cost me to fix.
