05 chopper EHC or ????

ok fellas from what i see on here it might be my EHC... but here goes my senario...

i had my 05 chopper die on my a few months back... battery was dead and found that my plug of my headlight harness was melted to the bulb. so i replaced the harness and replaced the battery and all was good.

the other day i was riding and all seemed fine (i did run with my high beam on since it was kind of congested out on the roads)... and when i stopped at a buddies house the bike wouldnt start. same type of issue... no power to dash/tach... smacked the battery and got dash lights so i tried to start it and just got a click and lost dash lights... smacked it again and hooked up jumper cables and got the bike to starts.. as soon as i took the cables off it died....so the next day after licking my wounds... i checked the obvoius:

battery connections: all good
EHC connectors.. tight and covered with di-electric grease (no corrosion)
battery has 13v

What lits are lit up on the EHC when you turn the key on and hit the run button?

ill check when i get the bike home. but i think i remember a single red light at the bottom left corner

You can't just check your battery voltage while the motor is not running. YOu need to check your voltage at the same time you press the start button. What brand of battery are you running? I've had some that didn't last a month. It could be that the battery isn't getting a charge, so once you get the bike running, check the Voltage regulator. If you're not getting a charge (14.5 V) then check the stator. There's a "how to" for checking both on this site. One other thing to check is your plug from the stator to the voltage regulator. Harley's were notorious for the plugs coming loose but I recently had the same issue on my Pitbull.

From what Ive seen here time and time again. DONT jump your bike off a car! (if you did that is) bad things happen.

just an update.... i did a load test on the battery and it was coming up bad... 12.9V before load 5v on load... gonna put a fresh charge on it and re-load test it to rule out bad battery... if its toast ill get a new one try to diagnose what is causing the "drain"... gonna check all of the grounds etc

A lot of times, batteries just take a dump. You can try to recharge and fire the motor off so you can check to see that the VR is putting out (should be about 14.5VDC), but my bet is that your battery has bit the dust and everything else is working properly. One last thing. If you weren't getting anything, "smacked it" and got the lights to come on, I would check all leads, grounds and make sure you put some dielectric grease in your EHC and secure it back in place.

another update. battery was bad... the positive post was jacked up... apparently i over torqued the bolt or the cable had too much tension on it which caused the post to break free from the battery... so it wasnt making contact all the time... so i installed a new battery and changed the way the cables are mounted to it .. instead of top mounting them i mounted them to the front using the supplied hardware and spacers. this should put less stress on the posts. thanks for all of the help fellas
