04 Mastiff ignition dead?

Hello,
My 04 Mastiff died going down the road. Cranks over, all lights work but no spark. Looked at the ignition module and it's LED is not lit (not sure if it should be). Also- no lights on EHC (don't remember if there should be before it's running). Checked voltage to ign module and had 10.5vdc. Batteries reading 13- found that a bit strange but the power comes out of the EHC so I don't know if that's normal? Any ideas of what to look for next? Should I be seeing some kind of lights?

Its your cam sensor. You need a new one.

Not so sure about the cam sensor. I hot wired the 12 volts to the ignition module, bypassing the EHC, and the ignition modules LED lit up. Seems to tell me that there is not 12 volts being supplied out of the EHC to the ignition module?

Sounds logical to me! A bad cam sensor would have nothing to do with the supply voltage from the EHC. Better check the wiring between the EHC and the ignition module. If all is good I would suspect the EHC isn't doing its job...

Its been noted on the forum a number of times

That would great if it is. I'll call them on Monday. I find it odd though that the 12v supply to the module is reading 8.4 volts. If I didn't do this for a living the last 25 years I'd be more worried about frying something:up:

I'd be interested in hearing how a bad cam sensor can cause a reduction in the supply voltage!

From the 04 BD manual
"
The red LED on the ignition module will flash when the motor is turned over
and the sensor plate sends timing impulses to the module. If it doesn't, suspect the sensor plate is defective and replace.
"

I suspect Big Dog designed the EHC to function in this manner as each individual I have helped with this issue has reported the reduced voltage issue.
EHC recognizes the Cam Sensor is not functioning, reduces voltage so Ignition Module gives you an indication that there is an issue with the Sensor.

Actually right at the battery. Funny thing is lights and everything worked, just not enough juice to the EHC. After fix- the red led on the EHC came on after the run switch is pushed and the led on the ignition module flashes when the starter is running.

And that's why you do a little troubleshooting (even if that means reminding people of the basics) before throwing parts at a problem... :lol::lol::lol:

Get A Service Manual And Read It Front To Back A Couple Of Times Then Use It While You Solve Issues On Your Ride.

The only way you can troubleshoot something that's broke is if you know how it works when it's not!!! :2thumbs:

Don't get me wrong I love helping everyone I can here but geez you can at least do the basic troubleshooting before you jump on here and start crying Wolf.

Since all the lights and starter were working I didn't go for checking the negative side connection- if I did, I would have saved a little time. O well- I learned a bit more about my bike and about following my rules of doing the ordinary first. Pulling out the "replace this" shotgun would have been the last choice... Even if suggested by "Wonder Woman"... :flag:
