'03 Bulldog electrical fire

Greetings, all.

I bought this a couple weeks ago -



The bike had less than 1000 miles on it. The 2nd time I took it out on the road, the bike started running and wouldn't stop, even though I hit the kill switch and turned off the key.

Several wires burned under the seat, and the battery posts melted. Interestingly, the main fuse didn't blow. So now I have a few questions for those in the know:

1. Where can I get replacement wires? This bike has, conveniently, a segmented wiring harness. The wire segment I need has a part number, but my e-mail to BDog went unanswered (which really pisses me off).

2. I was told, among other things, that the starter may have shorted out. When I went to a local shop to inquire about ordering parts, he told me that taking the starter out on that motor was a major job that required removing the clutch, among other things. Is this true?


3. Has anyone else had a problem like this??

Was the underside of the seat wet? (had this melt terminal posts in the past.)

Pulling the started is two electrical connections and two bolts -- find another shop 'cause they just showed they're stupid.

Call a BDM dealer near by and they can order parts for you once you describe what you need. If you're having electrical problems it may be worth ordering an entire harness so that you have it.

Then again, I'm biased since I ripped out all my BDM electrics this winter....

No moisture under the seat or on the frame at all. In fact, I don't think this bike ever saw rain.

The previous owner installed an alarm, which I suspect was the cause of this.

Thanks for the heads up on the starter. I had suspicions that the shop was trying to talk me into bringing the bike in because work is slow for them.

on yours you have to remove the outer primary I think to remove the jackshaft bolt. Other than that it is as easy as chacha said. Lots of help here. look on ebay for the wiring harness I see them pop up from time to time
