02 pitbull hammering starter

got an 02 pitbull, when trying to start the starter sounds like a jackhammer for about 5 seconds then it turns motor over and starts, took inspettion cover off and watched gear to see what it was doing and it meshed as soon as start button was hit, took sylinoid cover off and manually pushed it in and same thing happened., i am at a loss, any ideas ?
