Thanks. Looks like mine is set on 3, i haven't tried any other settings on it.
A lot of guys run #3. I ran #3 for years without a problem. Then one day coming home from work, I was running about 70 in high gear, and I came up on a slow poke. I moved into the left lane to pass him. Then the asshole started speeding up to the point that I was just barely passing him. I saw a big rig coming up behind me so I gave it some gas to get by this butthead. I got the unmistakable sound of pinging coming from the engine. When I got home, I moved it to #2. I took it out for a ride and tried to replicate the situation. I didn't get any pinging, so I left it on #2. I have the 585 cam installed, which creates quite a bit more cylinder pressure. I think the timing curve on #3 was just too steep for the motor under heavy load. I did some research and I found that most engine builders, including John Sachs, recommend 28 degrees of total advance, which is #2. #3 is 30 degrees. That is probably fine with the stock cam.
