Screw size in primary

Energy One
I'm guessing the top screw vibrated out and it's down in my primary somewhere. Does anybody happen to know the size or do you have a picture of what it would look like once it's installed? Screw vibrated out last night and boy did it make a loud noise. I'm glad I shut it off fast

Yeah the bottom screw and nut that you see adjust the chain Tensioner, but there's another hole on the top which is empty as you can see in the picture and that's kind of what I'm looking for

I meant to say the top screw holds the chain tensioner in place and that's the screw that I'm looking for meaning the size

Yes, that is what my manual says goes in the top hole and correct the chain adjuster nut is below the top hole. It is the Chain Adjust Screw that goes in the top hole that holds on the Chain Adjuster Assembly.

Take a magnet to fish the missing 1 out. Don't run the bike until you find the missing one in the primary. Use red Loctite on it when you re-install it.
Yeah I'm trying to find it. I cannot see it with a flashlight and I cannot move the chain at all , I'll try to use a magnet and see if that works.

Okay thanks so much, I'm still trying to find the old one. My teeth or what? And of course you can't move the chain to try to spin it around to find it, going to try to use a magnet now and see if that works

Do you know if it will turn without having the bolt that connects the tensioner in place? I've got the bike in My enclosed trailer had to go pick it up this morning. I wanted to see what it was. I thought it went something to do with my primary. If I can't find it through the little filler hole, I could always take off the larger ones on both sides to see if the screws in there correct? Since I have it drained already without taking the whole casing off

This is the cover that I was thinking of taking off but I don't know what the torque specs are so I didn't want to do that if I don't have to. But if I can't find the old screw I got to find it somehow, does anybody know the torque specs so I can put it back on properly? Thank you again everyone!

Here's the picture. It didn't come over before. I'm not. Question is if I take this cover off can I can I see the teeth inside the primary and below it if the screw happened to drop below?

If you already have it drained, ya might as well go ahead and pull the whole outer primary cover and check every thing out chain and sprocket wise then find the AWOL screw and adjust the chain while you're there.
Yeah I was hoping I did not have to do that cuz I know this. Probably some kind of gasket that I need to get that this one won't be reusable or something. I was hoping to get this thing buttoned up for bike night tomorrow night. I guess I won't. Do you know if I take just the two covers off the one that's in front of the back? Sprocket and the other two nuts that are covering the front sprocket if I can see underneath the sprocket to find that bolt

If you don't find the bolt and remove it. It will find a way to get where it shouldn't be. believe me I know.
Oh I hear you loud and clear. I've had this stuff happen to me with other bikes cars. You name it. You must find that missing in action bolt. Otherwise it'll find you

You already have one cover off, so if you pull the other cover, and don't find the darn bolt, THEN what are you gonna do? Not only that, but with the primary cover off you can get a real inspection of the chain and sprockets along with any other damage that may have occurred. That being said, it's your bike. Do whatever you want to do.

One of the old ones.
If you take off that round cover, all you find is a sheet of metal. Leave it alone.
As H-Man says, you need to remove the 14 screws and pull off the outer primary if you cannot fish it out with a magnet. Easy peasy..…. This is NOT regarded as a challenging mechanical task. Allen wrench, 9/16 socket and a torque wrench (and a quart of ATF)…..the gasket is neoprene and re-usable. put a tray or paper towels under the primary bcs it tends to slop out some oil When you pull it off. Sometimes you have to smack it with a RUBBER mallet to knock it loose. Make sure you have all 14 screws removed. Make sure the gasket is in the groove all the way around the primary case— don’t remove it. Find your lost machine screw and replace it (red Loctite) as John Sachs advises above. Adjust your primary chain—-5/8” to 7/8” total slack (top to bottom). Torque the 9/16 bolt to 25 ft lbs. Replace the primary cover using the sequence described below with blue Loctite. Torque as described below. Put in 20-24 ounces of AT-F (or your lube of choice) in the primary. Torque the inspection plate as described.
Take the torque values and sequences seriously. Understand the difference between in lbs and ft lbs. If you wanna really do it right, wire brush to clean the bolts and run a tap in the holes to clear out old Loctite— it takes longer, but torques are more accurate …most guys don’t mess with that unless they have a leak.
Even for your first time, it ought to take an hour or so if nothing was damaged by the screw falling.
Then ride it to bike night.
One of your posts said it made a bad noise…if it was just the primary chain slapping around a bit and you got it shut it down quick, I bet you’re OK. Primaries are built tough…..but If the bolt has jammed into any gear teeth you might have a problem. You’d have noticed because the bike would have locked up.IMG_0212.pngIMG_0213.png

Finally got that screw out. Definitely was chewed up , but I was determined. Thank you all for your help. I'm going to put it back together. Clean out all the shavings that are in the inside of this from that screw but all my teeth look pretty well. none are broke
