Need tires

Good Evening Everyone,

As I am getting the bike ready for riding again, I took note on the condition of my tires and I need to get both front & rear. I read several threads on different brands that folks have moved to. AVON (which is what I have) still pretty hard to come by and if the vender has them they are pretty high dollar. One thred had a link to Amazon which has the (Shinko 611 Front $95) and the (Shinko 011 Verge $235) which is not too shabby price wise. I did read that some folks are using Shinko’s, AVONS and Metzelers from 1 to 2 years ago. Those of you that made the switch to Shinko’s or Metzelers, are you still happy with the performance? Shinko’s have been the only ones I have found so far with the best price on Amazon. While I don’t want to have to spend a fortune, I would rather spend more on better tires. However if the Shinko’s are up to par, I will roll with them. Thanx for any insight provided.

Never used Shinko tires, so cannot say anything pro or con about them. However, I do use Metzler both front and rear. Have been more than pleased with the performance and longevity with the older 880 model. Just recently mounted a pair of their latest model, the 888 ~ so far I really like the ride. Just my 2¢

I like the Shinko's. We ride these choppers like crotch rockets, through these Windy Missouri roads, and they stick to the road very well.

I've used Avon, Metzler, and currently Shinko. I think the Shinko's are holding up just fine. Avon used to give the best milage but then they changed up the tire formula. Not so good anymore. As always.....jmo.

On my 3rd set of Shinko’s. Happy with them, will buy again.

They are soft/sticky handle and drive well. Have a nice look also.

Shinko, dunlop and avon are all a good tire, i have no complaints on none of them....price is the only factor between the 3

Thank you all for your input! When it comes to the Shinko’s, it looks like the front tire option is a Bias and not a radial. For those of you running the Shinko’s, is that the case? I’m looking at the Shinko’s 611 MH90-21 And the Shinko 011 on the rear. I guess there are some opinions that both tires should be the same. I just want to make sure I am putting the right tires on the bike. Also, I have not had to do this so the quote I received seemed a bit high. About $1100 to replace both tires and wheel bearings. Basically one of the shops is charging me about $550 for the tires, bearings and dynabeads and about $415 in labor. Then adding in the tax comes to about $1100. Does this seem about right? Just don’t want to be taken advantage of. Just not a lot of options up here in Kitsap county WA. Thanx again for your thoughts.

Jmo, get a bearing puller and beads from amazon, order your tires wherever you can save $. Get some bearings from HDM. Do your own bearings and just get the tires changed out. Charge for just tires should be in $150-175 range. Should save you $$ in the long run... again, jmo.

Sounds like there charging a 100 per hour...i wished you lived here i would do them for 200.00 labor...i charge cheaper labor cause i have no overhead

Thanx Fellas. I appreciate it. Yeah, basically they are charging me $85 for the front, $212 for the rear (cause it’s ”oversized.), and $115 for the bearings. This is just for the labor. That is what kinda got me. I think I will look around for a different shop. HMAN, I‘ll look on line for a bearing puller. If I get the tires on Amazon or Ebay, I can save myself about $130. I know WSW and HDM sell the bearings too. They want to charge me $70 for the front and rear bearings, so not too bad, but WSW and HDM have them for less. Yeah, knothead, I wish I did live closer as well. That would help out so much, plus I would have a chance to meet some of ya’ll in person. My only other concern is does the front “have” to be a radial like the rear. Seems all I can find is the Shinko in Bias. Everywhere else the AVONS are out of stock for front and rear. The Metz are just too far out of my price range.

The front tires are bias ply contruction not bias belt that your thinking of...so dont pay attention to the bias stuff when comes to avon, dunlop or shinko.. all 3 will say bias on them...its a bias ply construction but also basically a radial since its not bias belt

Also otc puller on amazon is cheaper priced than the pit posse bearing puller...i have both brands and they are the same...think otc version is like 45.00

I never really put any consideration of the belted types, biased or radial, a little bit of an older term, nor could I tell any difference.

Front and rear tires are so dramatically different due to size, and weight on them, no real need to match them in any way

I remove my wheels and typically pay ~$50 per tire for installation FYI

Bearings are easy and do myself, but I don’t think they need replaced as often as some suggest. I do always check them for any play and smoothness.

Knothead and Jwooky, thanx for schooling me on the tire situation. I feel much better now having that info and backup. Nick morris, not sure if I have enough space to pull the wheels in the garage, but I will order the bearing puller. Should be able to get other uses too. Thanx again to everyone that was able to provide guidance on my situation. I am sure all this will help someone else out in the future as well.
