Scavenge oil or no

Just bought a new to me 04 chopper. Changing all fluids. Trying to decide if I need to buy a scavenger or not. I have no clue what oil last guy used bc he passed away. I’m putting mobil1 20w50 syn back in but I don’t know if old oil was synthetic or not or if it matters to mix with what’s left in engine and new oil I put in tank. Let me know your thoughts.

Fwiw using Amsoil 75/140 in tranny and Harley formula plus in primary.

One of the old ones.
Welcome to the pound.
Lots of valid opinions/choices on oil—many use Mobil1 full syn V-twin, Spectrol in the trans and plain AT-F in the primary. A quick search will give lots of info that Forum members posted in the past. Most important are: 1) use quality oils, 2) be on schedule for changes/filters.
If all you want is to cycle the old oil out of the sump this one time, put a drain pan under the filter, fill the oil tank with new oil, and start it up and let it run until it clears—then clean up the mess. I use a big bakery tray, then brake cleaner to clean up.
Alternately, you can drain the sump from underneath.Take care not to overtighten the drain plug, as it‘s threaded in aluminum, so if it strips, you’ve got a real problem with the crankcase. It’s inaccessible (4” off the ground) and you could get metal shavings in the sump when drilling and tapping new threads, etc.
Or buy a Scavenger If you plan to drain the sump at every oil change.

I have a scavenger and usually only use it once a year or two.

I find a piece of cardboard works better. The scavenger makes a mess just unscrewing it like the oil filter. I used that once, and said well this is a waste of money the cardboard I was using was better. I got one socked away somewhere, never used it again. Cardboard just funnel it and you're done.

Some may disagree with me, BUT... When I change my motor oil, usually every 1,000 miles, I drain the oil tank, the magnetic plug on the bottom on the motor, and of course the oil filter. I let them drain over night, with the bike as upright as possible. I feel this should vacate ALL the old oil. I also use teflon tape on the motor plug, and oil tank plug, and use common sense and do NOT over tighten the plugs. Being doing it this way for years, NEVER a problem. Works for me. As far as some say, do not drain from the bottom case oil plug, for fear of stripping it. My response is, why did S&S put a magnet on the drain plug, if not intended to remove. My 2¢

If you have the money and want a cool tool to have in your collection, sure, go ahead and get it. However, as with cars, there is always going to be some old oil left over after an oil change and cars go for thousands of miles. Tons of bikes have done it this way too and there are tons of bikes that get up there in the miles. I don't think it's really necessary, but I bought one anyways because I can't help but buy gadgets to make one job you do from time to time easier. I have specialty parts for an Audi I had that I'll probably never use again....but I wanted them so I bought them lol

You can mix synthetic and non synthetic, it happens all day every day. I use Amsoil as Mobil just isn't what it used to be, but it's still a good oil. I just prefer spending more on bougie oil I probably don't need lol

I don't scavenge or try and suck it out. I drain it and replace filter. I usually start draining while doing other projects then come back to it. I use amsoil (have on every bike I have owned) and have done a bunch or research as an amsoil dealer in the past to compare with others...while a lot is preference and sometimes hype/advertisement I will say that my motors have run cooler and quieter and most importantly have had less wear. In my high performance diesels the amsoil has outperformed everything else that I have seen, I recommended it to every customer with every motor I built after breakin.

Yuup, I use a 1.5 or 2 L plastic, Coke or similar, bottle as a funnel..... simple.
