2001 ProSport Fuel / Tank issues

Hey guys

Like the tittle says I have an 01 Prosport and I am having some Fuel issues. The manual says its a 5 gal. tank, it sure looks like a 5 gal tank - but I have never been able to get a full 3 gallons in it. 2.4 gal MAX usually

I kept thinking it was a Petcock issue so I attached some clear tube run into a gas can with a nearly FULL tank of gas, and turned the petcock ON. Fuel flowed freely and clean into the gas can. I used a funnel with a coffee filter in it to make sure the fuel was clean and free of foreign material.

When the fuel stopped flowing I turned the petcock to RES (Reserve) and finished draining the tank with no issues. Sat on the bike and shook it side to side to insure it was dry. Then I returned the less then 3 gal of fuel back into the gas tank and looked down into the gas tank to see the level at the top of the tank. - It was Full.

My friend with a 2001 Wolf has a similar problem only getting 110 mi. per tank

Anyone got anything

Well, it is what it is. We usually stop and top off @ the 100 mile mark. You could always carry an extra can? Seen that done... These tanks were for the pretty paint. They didnt care so much about practicality. Jmo

Welcome from NJ Joe,
I'm personally not familiar with your tank but this document on page 1.2 says you should get approx 150 miles with both tanks full with 5 gal as you say. If it has 2 caps one is right hand and the other is left hand. I'm thinking your just not filling both tanks?

Are you able to remove both caps? Pretty sure my split tank is 4.5 gallons. That’s 2.25 gallons per side. Seems you should definitely be able to get more in them. But like HMAN said most of us fuel up around the 100 mile point. No sense in taking chances. Hope you figure it out. Keep us posted! :chopper:

Yeah, what Mike said. Bet ya aint pulling both caps. These are true split tanks with a crossover line up front. Right hand tank has right hand threads, left tank has left hand threads. Ya gotta fill BOTH to get ur 5 gal.

You guys are good

Never occurred to me to try twisting the left cap in the left-hand thread direction. All I knew was on Dynas you'll screw some stuff up if you do try to take the cap off, So I tried it (right handed) and never tried it again

Once again - Thank You all very much

While you are getting acqua with your second tank, make sure the crossover tube that drains the right tank into the left is not dry rotted. It will be the first thing to go. Also, now that you see how it works - think about how gravity works with fluid levels and be sure to fill your left tank first. Then top off your right tank.

I found when I repainted my tanks, BD put liners e.inside the tanks, since obviously they used some older parts. Maybe nobody got around to moving the tank when they lined it. ????
