Hey Guys when I started the bike up this year I noticed my speedo would go off and on. Then one day the bike would not idle . Then everything is ok again. So I checked the stator at the plug with the bike running and at idle it was around 25-26 volts them at 2000rpm it shot up to around 50+ Is that way out of range?
Continuity tested ok.

Thanks for any help

Check the voltage across the battery which would be the charging voltage after the VR ( voltage regulator). It should be ballpark 13.5 to 14.5 VDC and not more. If you have the correct voltage your VR and Stator are working fine.
Double check for loose or dirty connections and look for fault lights on the ehc for clues. A chafed wire bouncing around could cause wacky stuff to happen. Closely check the wires under the seat/tank as best you can and up by the speedo . Check connections on any relays or circuit breakers.
If your battery is old replace it and if it's not at least have it load tested to help eliminate it as a possible cause of your intermittent issues.

Thanks mike, it jumps all over the place mostly 14.5 to 14.6 when the bike is running at the battery. I am just going to replace the whole charging system. At the stator plug it jumped to 75 volts at one point.

The 75 volts was that AC or DC because you have to remember the stator puts out an AC voltage and the voltage regulator converts it to DC and regulates it to 13.6 to 14.6 volts DC. And the voltage will jump around at the battery because of the idle of the bike. It doesn't idle continuously at 1000 rpm's it jumps from 925 to about 1100. Which could be the jumping you're seeing at the battery. I have tomorrow off so after I wake up or very early in the morning I can compare your voltage reading to mine if you would like?

I'd also rev up the engine and check the voltage. 14.5 at idle sounds high for most charging systems, unless it has a compu-fire system in it.

VR's can fail by not letting enough voltage/amperage thru or by letting too high a voltage thru.

The 50 ac volts is at the stator plug when the bike is running at idle , that is way to high. Check youtube videos it should only be about 25 to 28 ac volts I think on most bikes. But I have a good one for you check this out.... How the hell does this slip out??? I have tried everything.

Well that is what I had to do , lower the oil tank enough and at an angle to slide the VR out the left side. Not that hard but really unnecessary design.
I also think being located under the bike between the engine and trans. it probably gets really hot.

I wonder if yours has the 3 phase 40 amp stator in it?

Hey Guys, I got the stator out and ordered the compu-fire 40amp system. For those of you that have installed this system and ran into any problems please post and let me know so I know what to expect. I know I may have to file down the knobs on the inside or maybe not.

I did my bagger I didn’t have to file anything not sure if it had already been done prior to me getting the bike. When I got the bike my regulator was behind the spoiler. When I redid it we put it in the Frame like in the picture above.

So just the 32 amp stator. Well just a recommendation, when you change it upgrade to the 40 amp system.
Hey I want to talk to you about that upgrade I still am running the 32 amp system myself next time we meet let's figure that out I'm interested

I've put them on both my K-9's I've owned and did not have to do anything to the primary case either time.
