WEIRD - Electrical Problem

Alright, very weird…

The bike has been 8 months sitting in my mechanic´s workshop while I was away (yes, 8 months away from home in a desert)… I call him on the phone telling him I will be picking it up in a couple days… he replies, "all good, I did take her out for a short ride every now and then"… all cool….

Well, yesterday I get a WhatsApp photo of my Yellow-Bitch with the lights on…. And my mechanic telling me he found her like that when arrived to open the Shop at 0800 hrs. Impossible to turn the lights off…. Had to disconnect the battery.

Battery fully charged and reinstalled and NOTHING…. It does absolutely nothing… key on and nothing happens.

Any one has had anything similar. Any ideas??

Yes, still original EHC……. I do have a spare one... should it be the first thing to try?

Cheers
Franco

Check that your battery still holds 12.8 volts. If it wasn't on a trickle for the last 8 months, it could be wasted. A parasitic drain may have drained it to the bottom and killed it. If it's good take a look at your EHC for fault clues.

1. With a test light, ground the alligator clip to the frame, touch the battery lead post first with the pointer.
a. It says the ground cable off the battery can light the test light.
b. No flow, the ground side off the battery to frame is the blocker.
c. Scrape off old metal with a straight edge razor and expose new metal at both the battery post and cable contact points.

2. Same test, just touch the posi eyelets at the cable side.
a. This says the flow can transfer over the the red cable and out from the lead post.

3. Test light point stabs the posi side of the hot wire going into the EHC.
a. This is after you find it's hot going to the one side of the main fuse.
b. Test light point stabs the other side of the fuse so there is flow and shows fuse is not blown.

8 months!!! My hats off to you SIR. I did 5 days there in 94,it was BS then and I’m sure it’s still the same. Welcome HOME brother. It sound like key switch wiring is out. Or the wire that goes to ignition. Good battery or bad battery the lights shouldn’t come on until key is turned on. Just my first thoughts on subject.

Welcome back Franco...sounds like you got some good suggestions on this strange problem already. I would def start with checking the battery out, low voltage does some strange things on these old Dogs.

OK Guys,

As I already had an spare EHC from @Axel on the shelf from some years ago, I plugged it on and "Voila!" all Good as Gold!!!

I did check the Battery... Battery was/is good. My Original EHC never did give me a hard time.... but, I guess the time did come to put it to rest.

Thank you All.

Glad you have solved it! I have a spare one I have damn near worn out carrying around since 2009. Used it twice—once to test it, and once again (turned out my OEM one wasn’t bad). It is still among the things I pack first when traveling....

Before I got rid of the old EHC I would re-install it to double check that it has truly gone bad.

Yes, mine was in my back-pack on all long rides.... never had to use it.... finally I did place it in a box in my garage and it's been there since... now!

I did have, also, an original (spare) one in the past and it did "save the day" to another K9 here in Spain. I did pass it onto him FOC some years ago.... can't remember his screen name now, he's not active here but he's a Member... or he was.... "Rafa" from Burgos, Spain. He imported an 07 K9 from the US and I remember he got in touch, here in the Forum, with the original owner!

All good Brother. I need to catch up here.... still riding hard I guess? you two are doing some serious riding!!!

Keep it up!

Best Regards.

I will do, and I will keep it in my collection of parts..... but I think it's done now. Can't find the picture of it but on the label states 2005, one of the very first EHC installed on the K9 models (K9's were born in 2006). It has done very well.

I know the EHC has been blamed lots of times WRONGLY, I am one of those who always been saying it is not the EHC..... but this time..... anyway, I will re-try it just for the sake of it. This one deserves it! 15 years without a single problem... I guess I was lucky and got a good one.
