Tauer Machine Hellhound Open Primary

I ordered a 3" Hellhound open primary yesterday from Tauer Machine. I will keep you all posted on how it plays out for those wanting an open primary. The website says it is a custom machine shop and make all their own primaries, I am hoping they will make it! The order went through and was processed.

I'm looking forward to seeing it! I have the Baker. I'm very happy with it, but wish it was a bit wider. I'm not a fan of 4" and 5" belts, because they look like treadmills, but the 2.4" belt on the Baker could be a bit wider IMO.

The main problem your going to run into is, the starter on the K9 is in a different place than the Chopper. I don't believe there is room around the K9 transmission, to repossession it, with Ultima backer plate. I have both inner primary plates in stock. I'll try to make some time this week to dig them both out, to see just what the difference is.

That would be greatly appreciated. I may just end up buying and Ultima 6 speed rsd and selling the stock Baker RSD. Sucks because that is one of the reasons I bought the bike was the Baker transmission, S&S 117. The frustrating part is that I did plenty of research before I bought the K9 over a Big Bear Sled and went with the BD since I found plenty of open belt drives online 3 months ago WSW, VCW, Karata, etc. It appeared they were easy to get, however they failed to remove them from their websites even after they knew they were never going to sell them again.

Well I know 3months ago and more WSW had ONE and listed it as the last one and was informing people that Baker wasn't making them any more, In fact it created a big to do in certain circles where someone else claimed that they were still being made but just "on demand" which appears from what I have seen to not be the case.
JP Cycles had a few left that sold out.
VCW in my experience is slow to update their website, but that's only my perception.

You have to remember -- you are looking for parts that were a niche when they were new and the bikes were being built, with say 2500 K-9 a year built or so how many open belt drive do you think they should have produced and for how long afterwards. Can't really blame the manufacturers.

Also, unless I am mistaken, on a K-9, you can not just swap to a Ultima transmission.
You need to change the primary (which you plan to do) but I thought you had to change the transmission plate as well (cut out old one and have new one welded in to replace).
Please someone confirm or correct me on that -- that to me seems like a pretty big job just to turn a bike into a washing machine.

Sorry couldn't help myself -- too many open belt drives sound like washing machines to me. But whatever makes you happy.

backing plate bolt pattern to the trans won't line up, starter isn't the main issue.

@Jersey Big Mike pretty much covered it. Cut and weld on different trans mount then put in a different trans then you can go to the belt drive. So it's possible just a full tear down.

I think I’ll wait for the trans to die before I do all that. The cost to benefit just isnt there.
Plus I like the way my gulf war challenge coin is mounted on the primary. I made that last night and it didn't cost me anything.
