In the market for a K9 or Softail Chopper and looking for advice!

Hi all,

Just joined the forum and introduced myself over in the "Introductions" section. I have been riding for close to 20 years (most of that time on a heavily-customized '86 Harley FXR), and I have always wanted a chopper. I always loved Big Dogs, but they were never really financially within reach for me until recently.

I am looking for a low-mileage K9 or Softail Chopper in very good condition. (I'd really prefer an '06 or later K9). I would appreciate ANY useful advice the experts here can provide, but I am wondering about a few specifc things already:

1. Are there any common issues I should look for? I have mostly heard about electrical issues (especially with the EHC), but that's a bit hard to assess in an inspection.

2. Besides this forum, what are the best websites to keep an eye on? I live in the Pittsburgh, PA area, but I am guessing I may need to look nationwide and have the bike shipped, as my options around here will likely be limited.

3. Has anyone ever heard of Certified Powersports in West Palm Beach, FL? (http://www.certifiedpowersportsinc.com) They seem to have some nice Dogs. What do you all think about their prices?

Hi I own an 04 big dog chopper DT and I love it. I actually only paid 7600. it had 7400 miles on it however there were some electrical issues and for one I had to replace the original Thunderheart ignition and went with a programmable Ultima single fire ignition. The rest of the electrical issues were not too serious and I was able to clean up and modify the starter button horn button and a few of the others to make them work and keep the OEM switches. The original owner claimed that it rode too hard but I’ve been riding choppers all softail for the last 20 years and so I didn’t notice it being rough, it real normal to me and I’m 64. I would look at dream machines and cycle trader as well. Good luck on your search

I have an 04 and an 05 bought both from OUTLAW cycles in Covington LA. He ships. Paid under 9k each. I love both. Go to his website and call him for some more photos he is a good person to deal with.

Any of the Dogs will be a good bike. The only only one I would shy away from, would be the 05. They were de-tuned for emissions. But in the last 15 years, I'm sure who ever had the fixed that. As far a electrical, the EHC problem is a myth. It got blamed because there was no protection between it and the battery. The problem was the charging system. If it spiked, the excess voltage would fry the EHC. Or if the battery was changed with a cheap ass battery, that shorted out, again fried EHC.
The new EHC's that are available today all have protection built in.
Remember how old these bikes are now. You may run into a broke wire, dirty contacts, and the ones sitting around with low mileage on them will also have dry seals that may leak, or had a mouse chew on it.
As far as web sites, you are on the best there is, and it is owned by HDM, which has 99% of all the parts you will ever need.

Yes. I'm goning to sell it. I am barely riding any of my bikes anymore. My freetime is spent either driving or working on my cars.

Oh no, its not that simple...

Once you have completed the one year initiation you have to submit all subsequent paperwork notarized to the corporate office, then wait the set year to see if you are approved by the board, then there's the fee to each member of the forum, then it's voted on to see if you have earned the right and the privilege to be able to own a Big Dog, at such time you will receive the trademark tattoo and patch, until said time you have to make yourself available 24 hours a day, be on any and every members beck and call and keep the clubhouse clean...

I went to Certified Power Sports about 15 months ago to look at a 2010 Bulldog Bagger, I was not impressed, the Bagger had several corrosion issues and a oil leak. Most of the corrosion was on the fork bells and foot pegs, all which could be easily replaced.

Here is a 2006 for $14,500. About 5500 miles nice bike. 320-491-5074 is my number, I can get more pics and details. I know it is a clean chrome package bike.
