Half helmet suggestions

Half helmet
OK guys and gals what’s everybody wearing for a half helmet. I’ve been out to the Harley shop and looked at all of theirs but everything looks so big on your head. I looked on the Internet at the crazy Al’s half helmet and it looks like it is fairly small in size but I don’t have anyone around here that has one that I could look at in person it’s hard to judge just from the picture on the Internet.
my state of Iowa doesn’t require that you wear one but some of my bordering states requires one. I do have a full face helmet but it puts such a strain on your neck after wearing it for a while so I just don’t wear it. So for those out-of-state rides I have to have one.
So any suggestions and pictures of people wearing one would be greatly appreciated.

I would do a google search. I know that doesn't help much, but it would depend on if you wanted a DOT approved helmet or not.

Yeah it’s definitely got to be a DOT but I just want something small and lightweight so when I leave the state I got something and I don’t want that great big mushroom head looking thing.

It's hard to avoid that mushroom thing since the spec to pass says 1" minimum of foam between helmet and head.
Get to a bike show and check out as many options as you can, some not bad options are out there but you have to look for them.
I have 2 1/2 helmets, one is an old NEXL that's not made anymore and the other is a cheapie chrome style number.
My biggest concern is weight -- I hate them damn things on my head!

There aren’t many helmets out there that can make you cool looking. most people are looking the bike as you pass. Not saying that guy has a very large helmet. Just pick one that is DOT approved. No one wants to take a spill but if you do, no one wants to get a call to identify the body. Good luck. Happy motoring with a protected head. You can be cool when you get there.

It’s not really the look it’s the Weight / Wind resistants. It makes my neck hurt after riding for hours if I’m cruising around town it Doesn’t bother me wearing my $480 full face helmet because I don’t have that 55-75 mph Wind pushing against my head.

Crazy Al's definitely has the smallest and lightest DOT approved helmets that I have found. It is very light weight, does not give a mushroom head appearance, or "buffer" in the wind; hence, it does not create neck pain. I have not seen the 1" foam requirement mentioned by Mike since these are not 1" thick but closer to the diameter of a dime - see pic below. The quick release strap is also a great feature. I have recommended this helmet frequently and know at least 5 people that have purchased and share my opinion of these helmets.

Both Colleen and I ride with a Badass carbon fiber helmet. We both have serious neck issues and this is the only helmet that does not leave our necks hurting after a long day of riding.

I wear what is called Hamr Head MC451. DOT Certified, fits like my novelty helmet I use to wear. No mushroom head here!

I have this helmet and like it a lot. Light, fits snug on your head and no mushroom look and the quick release chin strap is great.

I have a Headtrip helmet I bought in Orlando. They are a small mfg of polo and other sports helmet. They are not DOT approved. I bought mine in the mid 2000’s. I stopped in their shop last year to see if they had gotten their DOT approval and they have not, nor are they seeking it. The helmet is carbon fiber and Kevlar. When I talked to the owner years ago, their helmet passes every test but one. The test they fail is a 50lbs spear is dropped from 7 feet. the point cannot make it through all layers to touch the skull. (The test it to simulate your body skidding across the road and going head first into a guard rail.).

for me, I’ll take my chances. If I’m skidding to the point something is going to penetrate through the carbon fiber and into my skull, that may be the least of my problems, It’s super light, great strap, and good look. Florida doesn’t require a helmet, and lots of shops in Daytona sell DOT stickers for other states.
