Wolf - Cam Belt Broken

Hey Guys,
Cambelt Photo.jpg
So, my 2010 Wolf now has just over 5,000 miles on it (I know, I know, I don't get much time to ride it) and sure enough last time I took it out the cam belt snapped. So far, so x-wedge right but the reason I mention it is that everything I ever read on here told me if you had the easy start cams fitted this wouldn't happen. Well my engine had the 545 easy start cams fitted right out of the factory, I have the build spec from S&S to prove it, so clearly that is not the case. It can happen anyway.

Just a heads up to any other Wolf owners out there, seems like even if you fitted the cams the belt will still break. So check those belts.

Do a search for member "Chacha". I think he did a thread on the fix.

I heard the fix was to shim the cam chest is it like 1/8" shim? Going to have to take it off and clean it regularly I suspect since road grim will be stuck in there. Sounds like a bandaid fix by S&S to me.

Great feedback, guys..BadDawg Bill's remarks have me ready to look at the RS, but I have too many HD and BDM parts, T shirts, jackets and such. Can't afford to start that all over again hahaha......
Eric, the belt gets too hot and tears itself up..I think a yearly cleaning would keep it going just fine, as the belt is dry and appears to be like our final drive belts, only smaller. The problem became apparent when belts in warm climates failed a lot more often than bikes in cooler climates.Everything I found online indicates the shim is a good fix....
I'm unfamiliar with the stud breaking issue Mr. Smuth cites in post #21. I have not heard of other 124's with this issue and sure hope that it's related to the modifications and not systemic.

I have read that thread thank you PK, but it only really talks about changing the belt and putting in the easy start cams, which I have already although granted they are the 545's not the 569's. I have seen some people talking about a new plate that S&S gave them back in the day, I will have to look into that I guess.

According to some documentation I just dug up, their belt replacement PDF includes the below Step #13

13. We recommend installing belt cover spacer kit (500-0257) if not already installed.
Part # 500-0257 is just 4 Spacers and 4 New bolts. Can't find anything from S&S on the thickness of those washers in that kit but the bolts would just need to accommodate for that.

What Eric said. An S&S guy said that they noticed the belt failures were more common in the south, so they suspected excessive heat. They were correct. Replace the belt, install in the spacers (washers) and ride. It’ll take a lot to get the belt appreciatively dirty. Maybe check it once a year.

According to S&S and a couple of dealers parts for the X wedge motor are soon to be discontinued if they haven’t been already. This along with the rear tire issue is not great news for wolf owners.
