Backfire / jolt forward, cause for concern or just a fluke?

This morning on my way into work I was on the highway cruising at 3000 RPM and experienced of backfire followed by a forward jolt. Didn't happen after that and didn't happen on the ride back. Wondering if this is a cause for concern or just a fluke? If it makes a difference, towards the end of the morning trip, after I'd been idling in traffic for a while, as soon as I had a clear path, from stand still I gunned it forward I noticed the was a big cloud of smoke behind me

Sounds like its running rich to me or idling to low then the sudden hit if the throttle comes the smoke....basically loading up...going down the road at 3000rpm could be a few things from a touch of water or to rich...hard to say really without looking at the plugs

I'm getting 90 miles per tank, I figure I should do a little better than that so maybe it is running rich

Yea, you should be over 100 miles easy, I run about 125 before I fuel up and probably could go further but do not want to push it.
I hate walking.

Knothead could be correct, but Another thing it could be, is if the ignition module lost power for a second or two, the unfired gas will pop and lunge you forward. Bad key switch will do that, or a loose connection.

Mine did that but only at bike week a couple of years ago. Loading up in traffic. Got out of town and open it up then it cleared right up. Mine is probably a little rich an I get 110 - 120 per tank.
