Hiccuping

I just got back from a long weekend of riding and noticed that my dog is hiccuping and popping.......It does it every once in awhile but its annoying - the popping is more like a gun going off....I just put torque cones on and running Ness pipes and a G carb with a D&M spike air cleaner.....any help would be great

RenoMoe;

What drove you to the cones? Did the problem start after the new pipes or a long time after. Things to consider;

1. Clogged jets -- inconsistent fuel flow starving (hicupps) or dumping (poping) getting into the heads. In the later case, post-exhaust ignition of raw fuel mist in the pipes. :up:

2. Intake leak? Is there a good bracket on the spike? :confused:

3. Your bike has decided to make you look stupid in front of your hot wife -- the bike wants the hottie for itself. :roll:

Reno, I've always heard that torque cones are for small motors not large motors. No evidence though.

If the popping and backfiring started after you put them in then I would suspect them. I would install the washer baffle if you're trying to retain some backpressure.

Otherwise I would pull the float boal on the carb and ensure the jets are clean and blow everything out.
I just pulled mine an hour ago and found the jets clogged from my last long trip. Hopefully she will run great down to the Redwood Run on Thursday.

Good luck,
Ray

Reno....first a disclaimer...i'm mechanically challenged. :bang: :bang: BUT...with that said....I have the same spike cleaner that you have and had similiar problems. I rememberd that someone on this forum said that those cleaners work better in the vertical position than they do in the horizontal position. I tried it, turned my to point up....haven't had a problem since. Try it...if it works - GREAT. If not....then please refer to my first statement.:2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I had the Ness pipes and put torque cones in them for a while and didn't notice much difference - it didn't cause your symptoms with mine though but you never know. I'd check all the above and make sure your pipes are nice and snug - mine started popping a few weeks back quite badly - when I looked I was missing one of the nuts on an exhaust stud.

AZ is right too - a few people have said the spike works better vertical.

See you soon Moe

I problem started after I went to a G carb....Had it serviced and still doing the same thing? I will check plugs, and float......Thanks!

What jets do you have in the G carb?

also, when you changed to a G did you change the intake manifold? The 05's came stock with restrictors in the manifold and to change to a G you should either replace the restrictor plates with spacers or get a new manifold altogether (best bet).

My '04 107 hiccups once in a great while. Its annoying but happens so infrequently and at odd times for no apparent reason :confused: that I just ignore it.

It only happens when I am maintaining speed. Never does it when I crank on it or when I decelerate!

Its pretty much stock (G carb, stock BDM air cleaner, but I am running Crane Hi 4 dual fire ignition).

barhopper

Another round please
That filter is generally no good. It killed my dyno #'s. I cut my filter off and slid a K&N filter on it. Looks and works great.

I agree with barhopper, I had a D&M spike and it cut the air off at high rpm's. I wound up dumping it on ebay, never could make it work...

Back when I was in junior high and riding my minibike it would pop back through the exhaust pipe at deceleration. It would do this when I adjusted the high speed needle to a leaner mixture to get the last few rpm out of it racing down the road. If I richened the high speed a bit, the popping on decel would go away.

You're running too lean mid to high speed jetting I'll bet, due to now better engine breathing by adding less restrictive intake and exhaust.

By pointing the spike intake in an upward postion I would say that the air moving across it could actually be causing a low air pressure or vacumm and therefore causing a richer air/fuel mixture. When pointing the spike forward the air is forced inward easier causing a leaner mixtiure. You could adjust the tilt of your spike or rejet the carb.

That tilt your spike just doesn't sound right!!! but doesn't this make sense?

What do your plugs tell you to do?

Sounds like your running just a tad lean, you may want to go 1 size larger to eliminate the hiccup and lean is not good for your motor as it will run hotter.

Check your spark plugs and ensure that they are burning evenly. Sounds like a bit of an intake leak. The S&S carbs have a tendancy for the mixture screw to move over the course of riding. dose it occur at steady speeds, accleration or deceleration?

check your intermedite jet. I would recommend a # 33 or #34 I jet. what is your main jet size. try a #74 or #76
