Rubber in the rim

Cheers for the replies so far. Its definitely not brake dust. They are clean as a whistle. Id sprayed them with brake clean before the ride and they were still clean after. Its definitely rubber. Hopefully get it up on the lift/jack and have a more thorougher look under the fender. It did it a little with just myself, but more with a pillion on the back, which leads me to believe its tire/fender contact. Hopefully its that simple.
So could that lead me onto the possibility of the shocks starting to fail?

Just when I think Ive gotten on top of all the problems on this bike (had it for 7yrs and has always been something)....
Show pics of the tire, worn shocks wouldn’t cause tire rub, something is going on up in the fender a loose bolt or possibly a foreign object wedged in there

Wasn't trying to stir the pot anymore, just curious if you found the problem.
And... yes I do know what you mean " always something " I'm the 4th owner of a 13 yr.old dog that has been used, abused , road hard and put up wet countless times invested lot of time and $$ to make it right again.
Still a long way from being where I want it to be , but the things I've learned and done to it ( through the help and knowledge of the members of this forum ) make it priceless to ME
good luck with your ride I'm sure you'll find a solution

I have posted in the past about rubbing. My Pitbull has very little clearance between back tire and fender. In addition to the suction cups it also has two bolts that go through tabs on the pillion pad. The tabs are about 1/8 of an inch thick. When I first took the pad off I put the bolts back into the fender (so not to lose them) and made it down the street and heard a rubbing noise. If you have a similar setup check the length of those bolts because it is a very tight tolerance. A longer bolt could potential extend through the fender and touch the tire Also have someone sit on it and check to see if that fender is flexing.

Well, so far no concrete cause identified. BUT...... I check tire pressure and it was low at 30 psi instead of 40. My rear axle shaft bolt was a tad loose so it could have shifted slightly. Ive tightened everything up and got it back to how it should be. Next ride will see how it goes.

Finally -- Thanks for Update!
and don't forget the Adjuster Allen Head screws that keep the rear axle bolt from moving around forward and in Alignment! Sometimes people forget there are two sets of allen head screws on each side; one locks the other... So just tightening the axle bolt may not do it... Not to mention all the other good stuff others have suggested here!

PS: if the axle bolt was loose WTF! WHY!
better check for those Allen Head Axle Lock Screws! another WTF! if they are missing! and your axle is just moving around...?
I will stop by a church for you and begin to pray.

Yup always have those allens set. It wasn't loose loose, just wasn't as tight as it should have been. The set screws stopped it from moving forward, so they did their job. Hoping that has it sorted.

FYI - dont pay out the wang for nuts and bolts. Got to any of the big Ace Hardware stores. Ive picked-up bolts for the bike all the way up to fit my semi.

Yes I have the same problem on my 2006 Mastiff. I’ve readjusted the belt/axel several times with no help. Im sure now it’s the bolt head inside the rear fender for the RH rear taillight. It’s rubbing the tire on bumps and additionally with bumps in the road and my 130 lb girlfriend on the back. See how the bolt head is polished nice and clean inside my
fender well from being rubbed. I’m going to change it out for a Allen type button head bolt tomorrow. Something else, my friend has the same bike and has about a 1/4 inch more clearance between the fender and his tire at the rear.
Just My humble opinion

If you're only hitting opne side how far off center is your wheel in the fender?
You do know I hope that we have a local current and former Big Dog dealer near you right? JIC you need another set of eyes.

yeah, I know about American Biker I live in goose creek. My fender is off by about 1/8 an inch closer on right side. It was worse but I tightened down the right side fender bolts first which seemed to pull it over some. My friend has the same bike (06 Mastiff) and his tire is also closer on the right side. I changed the bolts for That hold taillights today from a hex head bolt to a smooth Allen button head bolt like the rest of the fender has and it will give a little better clearance. If this doesn’t help I’ll be doing the ride height shock adjustment like mentioned above sooner than later.

My 05 Bulldog had same issue must be a common fault... I put 422 heavy duty shocks in and adjusted to more ride height and fitted narrower headed bolts on tail lights to give better clearance. All sorted
