Gas pump auto-shuts off almost immediately at the pump when I know the tank is far from full

What’s more aggravating is fueling your truck up and the pump credit card reader is broke. So you go inside.me:” Can you turn on pump 2.”(Cashier,” no, how much you want”) me: “I want to fill the truck up” cashier: “ so how much you want” me: “I have no idea some where between 15-20 gal”. Cashier: “ how much you want in dollars.” So you do a quick math equation adding in you need 3/4 of a tank. Fuck $50 worth of unleaded. You finish pumping and you have 3/4 of a tank! FUCK!!!!!

Bring a Bic lighter with you. Hee Hee!!! Put the auto cut off about 1/2” in your tank also pull a hand full of paper towels and put on the seat side of the tank to catch any spilling.
be better to wrap those paper towels around the neck cause it WILL blow out. that way maybe you can catch it before it makes too much of a mess. and don't forget, when you get home, fresh coat of wax.

I also ran into the same situation on my way back from the Gathering....."How much gas do you want and pay right now before you pump the diesel". What a PITA when you just want to fill her up so you don't have to stop so often.
Let's see....I've driven 376 miles and I've been driving a little faster to get home so divide by 17 MPG which was about 22 gallons at $2.97 a gallon makes about $65.90 so let's just round this whole thing off to $3.00 a gallon.....Mam, can I get $70 dollars worth of diesel on Number (shit I don't know) its the pump right over there...can you see it? This was extremely frustrating because why can't I just fill up and pay for what I pump. I don't get it but I guess that's how it works in the middle of nowhere!
Fortunately, it worked out damn close almost full. But, it was nice to get back to parts of the country where the simple things we take for granted work! I also knew we were back in Louisiana when we got out the truck and it was that nice humid feeling
I've over flowed the Big Dog a few times and had to wipe off the spillage but it's been ok.

I always pump slow with the nozzle up where I can see the gas going in, don't want to get any on the tank. Yea im anal but dont want to use the gas station rags to wipe off the gas and put a million scratches on the tank

i let the gas jockey do it. in my truck anyway. perk of living in NJ.
my bike i don't take the chance. i've found that some gas pumps behave differently. it seems the newer stations i can get away with pressing the rubber boot down on the gas tank port and wait til its stops pumping. older ones you may have to pull the boot back a bit to allow fumes to escape. like filling a gas can. i always make sure the nozzle is down inside the large port inside the tank (see pic). and like taking a piss always give a little shake. no need to be dripping gas all over your paint.

Been setting the trip-o-meter and filling up every 100 miles.
Started sputtering today at 76 miles so I put it on the reserve line. That was barely enough to get to the highway exit, not even a mile.
Walked to a gas station, borrowed a tank, well you know the routine.
So I get that I don't need a fuel gauge if I'm using the trip-o-meter, the problem is I can't see in the tank to confirm that I'm actually filling it to the top. The gas pump shuts off too soon and the phone flashlight is too bulky to see accurately in there.
a) I've done some initial searching, does no one sell a fuel-gauge-cap for BDMs?
b) I wasn't able to wipe up the gas that spilled on my tank for a good hour after the spillage (getting to work, clocking in, getting wet paper towels from the restroom etc.) by then everything was dry. What's the best course of action to save the paint at this point?

When I fill my gas tank, I slow down the flow for the last 3/4 or so of the last gallon added. I have overflowed my tank half a dozen times when I relied on the gas pump shut off. Some of them embarrassing during a ride.
Anyway, lesson learned to go slow at the end and be able to see the gas as it approaches the neck. Stick a small flashlight in your mouth if the lighting isn't bright enough. Of course, I don't......

Yeah, probably at least until you get some practice.

It is not rocket science. I just pull the pistol out and lock it up against the inner hole pulling back the rubber part of the pump pistol. Then fill. It will still auto shut off when the gas gets to the top of the nozzle. I then add a bit more. It is not difficult to see the gas at the edge of the hole. I get exactly 3.4 when I have just switched to reserve status, and when completely empty it takes 3.8.
