why is it that we can take our cars to jiffy lube for like 20 bucks but when we take our shit to a big dog dealer for 5,000 mile service its 345???and thats takin my own oil?????then here the one i just cant get is you go onto S&S website they will tell you specifically they want mobil 1 in there motors...so if you are a big dog dealer dont you think you would want what the company wants????i have never been a fan of services for cars, trucks harleys and now these bikes,i believe it is just a way for the dealer to get his cut of the action as time goes by,i never took mine in for 500 or 2500 felt the need for the 5000 and now just think i will once again continue to do them on my own,i dont feel that was a wisely spent $345....do you guys all get yours serviced by dealer, independent or do it yourself!!!!!!!!!!!

the big thing is if you don't take it to an authorized service dealer, they can deny you later on warranty claims because "service was not done properly". after the warranty is up, not a problem.

Harley has been the same way for years. And I suppose by paying the big bucks you are supporting the company (and all those who work there and build them).

But I have always felt like you do. Its exorbitant! So I built my own! Nobody but ME (and an independent shop) will touch it even tho it has a 107 S&S, primary, and clutch right out of a Big Dog and from a Big Dog dealer.

So, what do I do? Wrench on my own (and it was definitely a steep learning curve) or if it is some real technical motor or electrical work, I go to a trusted independent shop.

My wife says I am a "penny-pincher" and a "tight wad", but every penny I save, I can use for something that I REALLY want and have saved the bucks to not have to put in on the plastic.

My 2 cents, Shovelcowboy

Well i have been told by a couple of dealers that if I did my own service to document properly and keep all my receipts and that it would not affect my warranty but dealers can be stealers it depends on who you deal with.

As far as the cost goes its like looking at a car you can get a 3000 lb car for $20,000 bucks. So thats $6.67 per lb. Our bikes weigh 700 lbs so they shoud cost about $4670 bucks (not counting what paint level you got)

Okay to much Beam here:cheers:

Jimi, I'm with Shovel and V on this. I do all my own maintinace and just keep really good records and all my recipts. That which I can't do or feel unsure of I either contact Jason ( Ohmster) on a how to or Ilook for a thread on here by Gas or some other very knowledgeable member for a detailed how to on that repair or take it to Steve Schesca at Cheasapeake HD if all else fails. My 2 cents. I just turned 11,200 miles today after just 1 year.

I do my own service. Didn't have to take it to the stealer because I baught my scoot used and had no warranty. It's definately more fun and you learn alot about your bike. THe best part is you know it's done right.

I do my own service. It really is going to help in the long run, I think. I'll get to know the bike better. That should help if I have trouble out on the road.

The nearest dealer that I know of is 250 miles away. I don't want to have to run there for every little thing.

And like Rainman says, I know it's done right.

Damm BBD that's some riding you trying to catch up with Ray?

I took my HD to the dealer till it was out of warranty now perform all maintenance myself. More rewarding and like Shovel, Jimmy, BBD and others you know it's done right.

Hey Jim, check the clutch adjustment. That often keeps netural from being found like it should. That's what happened on my bike. Also make sure your hiem joints aren't too tight. Try some WD-40 and anti-sieze compound on them.
When we riding again? Let me know

Erlwnts, I couldn't catch Ray if I rode all day and night :) I bought it to ride, not stare at. Although that does mean polishing it EVERY day without fail. But it's worth it without a doubt.

Hey Shovel. Where is Dog Town?
I thought that Dog Town WAS this site!

No, seriously, I have NO F--KING IDEA. I just found the hat at the thrift store (where I get most of my "Riding Attire"), liked it and bought it (for fifty cents I think).

It was like my helmet here. RIDEM COWGIRL!! (Note that she's HAVIN' FUN hangin' onto a big D--K and gettin' the RIDE OF HER LIFE)!

Got the whole works at the Thrift Store for a song!

Doesn't lift in the wind at all. AND the girls at the rallys like her, wanna get a closer look, and talk to me!!

Ya like it??!

BigBlueDog,

If you didn't polish it every day, you might cut into Ray's mileage numbers. But knowing how you like to keep your Dog spotless, telling you to stop polishing it is like telling the sun not to rise every morning, which is why you always have the best looking dog on our rides.

The hiem joints were mentioned and as we all know the BD are not the best. Did a upgrade on a friends bike for the circuit braker/fuse conversion and noticed that his 06 Mastiff shifter was sticking to the point of no return. He told me he was just tapping the shifter back after each up shift. His hiems were just shy of being locked up, put some lube on them and they were like butter. He didn't know they were supposed to be like that:loony:

Not to be a prick...well ok.:D How can you compare an oil change at jiffy lube to a 5k service on a big dog? You ever serviced one of these babies? It takes a few hours to do it right and that's with no beer breaks.

Have to agree with Vegas on this. It is not just an oil change for 5000 miles and if the dealer did the proper 5000 mile service, the money they charged seems reasonable. If they did just an oil and filter change, then find a better dealer.

It is also good to learn to wrench yourself. As far as warranty goes, can not find anywhere in the warranty section that says if one does not have service done by BD Dealer or authorized service center, that warranty will voided.

If an owner does their own work and does it using the proper parts, tools and equipment and has the skills and knowledge to do so, warranty should still be valid. If owner has work and does use the proper parts, tools and has no idea of what they are doing, well why should BD cover such if Joe Blow screws up something?

Now if there is an item that does need to be fixed under warranty, then that does have to be done by an Authorized Service Center or BD Dealer. Key is authorized and there is times when the owner, working through BD or any manufacture can get the authorization themselves.

As far as S & S goes, they recommend the Mobil 1, however it is not required! Big difference. Per the S&S Web Site Tech Tips for "What Type of Oil Should I use.

"What type of oil should I use?
S & S recommends a premium brand of 20W50 oil formulated specifically for motorcycle use for all Long Blocks. In Shovel-Style Long Blocks, 50 or even 60 wt oil is usually acceptable in hot areas where temperatures below 75 are seldom encountered. In S & S's experience it is best to break the engine in with petroleum-based oil and, if a synthetic oil is preferred, change to synthetic after break-in."

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 is one that meets the above along with a few others. If you stick in say Quaker State 4X4 Synthetic blend and have an failure due to oil, that may not be covered for it is not a premium brand of 20W50 oil formulated specifically for motorcycles.

Last note, if you do have a warrany item and did work yourself, for the most part they have to show what you did directly or indirectly lead to failure such as wrong oil and you have a failure due to oil, changing a light bulb to PIAA and having and oil failure is not directly or indirectly realted. Failure to follow break in and proper service is a reason in most case for the typical service intervals cover checking almost everything from change of oil to make sure all bolts are tighten, adjustment made, wearable items inspected, fuel filter cleaned, etc.

Also since you did not take yous in for the 500 or 2500 miles, some of those items done on the 5000 should have included the items that were not doen for the 500 and 2500 and not included in the 5000 mile.

Started doing my own wrenching the day the warrentee ended. Nothing beats doing it yourself--then you have nobody to bitch at but yourself:up:
