Found a 2008 K9

I’m heading 95 miles North East this Saturday to look at a 2008 K9 with 6800 miles that’s for sale. It sucks we got 8” of snow today and I won’t be able to throw a leg over it for a few miles. And looking at the future forecast we have 15 more days of it so it’s here to stay for a few months! Ugh!!!

If you get it, you're in for a real treat! I bought an '07 Mastiff back in August and my obsession with Big Dogs may or may not be unhealthy haha! Do your research on here though. There have been a few recalls such as side cover pins instead of bolts, a voltage regulator fuse, and be sure to ask about any wiring harness upgrades. I wish I had done a bit more research before buying (not that I wouldn't have bought it) just so I had a better idea of what to look for. Unfortunately I didn't learn of this forum until after I purchased. This is a really great forum with a bunch of guys and gals that really do want to help keep your Dog on the road.

I don’t even own one yet and I understand what you mean about the unhealthy statement. I’ve been on this forum for several weeks now and I think I have read a lot of new and old forms for at least 2 to 3 hours a day every day! I’m obsessed with all of the information and knowledge.
I’m aware of the wiring and old EHC modules giving guys problems, there’s tons of posts on that but I haven’t read anything on the side cover pins and voltage regulator fuse. Is this regulator fuse something that blows and is a one shot deal like normal fuses? I’ve read where guys are installing breakers, is this one of the applications there using these breakers for?

came with breakers, replace with fuses. and as far as the side covers, would be a good idea to check to see if they have the pins into rubber grommets instead of the bolts into captured nuts. they tended to stress the corners of the covers and crack them or even break the corners off. pin kit should be available from bigdogpartsking (Derrick and Donna)

Good information, I’ll make sure I check and see what’s on it. It all makes sense to have the rubber to assist with the vibrations.

Hope it works out for you. You will have to bring it down to Smethport this summer so I can see it. Hopefully we could go for a ride.
Yah for sure Jim. I have a few buddy’s I work with that live in Smethport. I either meet them over there and go for a ride or just pass through Smethport several times a year to head down through your neck of the woods!

The recalls we have mentioned are very inexpensive to fix. $33 for the side cover pin recall kit and like $40ish for the voltage regulator fuse. So if they haven't been done on the bike, it's not that deep, it just might give you some negotiating ammunition :)

Those are the prices I like! Great info!

I know the new wiring harness and EHC module is around $750 from BD. If this hasn't been replaced hopefully it’s one of the dogs that hasn’t ever had electrical problem. I’m an electrician by trade so rewiring the bike is no problem but the cost can hurt the wallet. I’d rather put my money in accessories or modifications.

I was told by the old Big Dog dealer here in Indy that if you buy 2007 or newer the electrical problems were fairly sorted out. I haven't had any issues with mine yet, but I know a lot of guys change it out for peace of mind. Isn't Axel's less expensive too?

And sometimes you find a pleasant surprise where the PO has already changed it, (EHC), and done a quality job too. That’s what I found on mine. When I opened it up to see which way I wanted to go it was already done with the RIP 2, (a few members helped me ID what I had).

So the only reason why the RIP 2 comes with a new wiring harness that runs down in the backbone must be for the different connector plug for the new EHC? If Axel’s EHC is reliable it would definitely be worth it along with the potential cost savings.

I will have to do some research also to educate myself so I can determine if this one has been changed or not. Most people would be up front and honest about it and then there are the guys that don’t (the gas and go business man)
