Oddly enough I was talking with my buddy about painting the bike last night. Just talking. And then this happens. Damn junk gas cap. Any idea if these are just standard H-D gas caps or are they Big Dog unique? I'm pretty sure they have to be at least one of them vented. Left kickstand side vented is bad juju.

Especially if the vent was removed like some on here tell you to remove instead of fixing.

Sorry to hear of your disaster. Was that av-gas? lol
Due to space restrictions in the garage, I put my bike up on two 4x4 wood blocks so it sits vertical.

The paint was probably chipped around the fill so when it leaked out and sat there for hrs it got underneath and just tore the paint up... That sucks and bullet stickers aren't going to cover it up....

That sucks man! I think some big dogs may have had some adhesion issues between primer and paint, I know when I striped my tank for painting it came off the primer in sheets. That would alow the gas to easily work it's way between the layers, wouldn't be surprised if you had the same issue.

Since you're bike has two tanks the left side cap is not vented. The vent is in the high side or right hand cap. You're cap was either loose or the gasket has gotten old and failed. Can you post the same pic with the cap off?

The caps are standard Harley style and can be purchased on line from aftermarket suppliers in many styles. You will need both a right and left hand thread cap.

If you are going to paint you're tanks be sure to check the liner inside the tank. They are known to fail also and should be replaced before re painting.
