Noise from Primary

Energy One
OK Here goes. I'll try to describe the noise. It sounds like a whrring noise when bike is in neutral and I pull the clutch in. When I put it in gear the noise stops. When downshifting as I come to a stop I hear what seems to be a louder version of the same noise. Noise seems to be coming from primary. I'm going to change primary fluid this week and see if that helps at all. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar noise. Thanks

Could be your throw out bearing, a loose hub nut, or the input bearing on the transmission. I've found all three will make a whrring noise

And none of those will be fixed with a fluid change. If you're not positive your hub nut is tight AND a hardened one, then order a nut and washer from Curtis and tear it down and put it back together so you know it's solid or else it's a ticking time bomb.

After doing a fluid change there is no difference in the noise. I was being optimistic that that would help. I'm going to take the primary cover off this weekend and see if the hub nut is loose. my question is since I have it opened up are there things I should go ahead and change while I'm in there. Also any suggestions on what else to look for once I have it opened would be appreciated. Again the noise is a whirring noise when the bike is in neutral with the clutch pulled in. As soon as I put it in first the noise stops. Have also noticed an occasional chirping noise, especially when the bike is hot, like in traffic when I take off from a stop. Hope these don't seem like dumb questions but I am a total rookie when it comes to working on this bike.

I'm working on one right now that has a noise that I can't find. I talked to another Big Dog mechanic that had run into the same thing. He found that it was the clutch adjusting rod vibrating in the transmission main shaft. Your 08 should have the smaller push rod, but the 06 and 07 had a bigger rod. When I get the new rod in, I'll measure the two and post what the different sizes are.

I would go ahead and have Curtis express you a new hub nut and washer. Also get a new primary cover and inspection cover gasket. They're sort of square now and seal much better. Further, as long as you're in there you might as well change the seal between the primary and the tranny. Parts are cheap, taking it apart twice is not. Check to make sure your tranny is full, if it's low at all and/or if your primary fluid smelled like gear oil at all you likely have a leak. Also make sure the primary vent is clean, it's on the backside of the primary in the middle/top. It's a little nut looking thing with a screen in it. If the primary can't vent it'll cause issues.

So, new nut/washer, new seals and a quart of regular old harley primary oil or B&M trick shift and you'll be set. Make sure you put the clutch plates back in as they come out and make sure you have a service manual. IF you don't, you can find one on here to download.

IF you have a compensator on your bike, check it as well. The spring will break and give some odd noises. The chirp may be from the belt. Rub a bar if soap along the inside edge and see if the chirp stops. If so, its just a belt adjustment. Jmo
