Born to run

Well, Blacktopper and I are in Omaha tonight---returning from a great week in Sturgis. My cousins were born and raised in Sturgis, so besides having a place to stay, I really enjoy the family connections. We mostly traveled there (about 800-850 miles) on US Routes trying to dodge rainstorms. That worked out pretty well. We went on different rides every day, including Spearfish Canyon, Vanocker Canyon, the Big Dog Lunch Ride on Tuesday, The Badlands, and a couple of runs to Rapid City to look over the vendors at the Harley dealership.
Roger's bike was pretty much in tip-top shape, but I spent some days (and a few dollars) because I wanted to ride my K9 (right at 70K miles). I somehow bent the front rotor and the rear one had a habit of wearing out rotor buttons. So I bought new wheel bearings fore and aft, new Avons, and put on two rotors I had squirreled away. Threw in a couple of replacement brake pads to boot. And spent most of a day repairing the little LED light in the license plate bracket. It was finally tip-top and ready to go anywhere.
The bikes couldn't have performed any better--no issues, no problems.
Planning to go home, we again looked at the rain patterns and decided to take I-90 east to I-29 south. It has been some years since I've traveled I-90, and it has been improved. It was smooth and traffic wasn't bad at all.
And of course there were a million Harleys on eastbound I-90. You all know the speed limit is now 80 mph on most of the Interstate system, and with a nice tailwind, Roger and I spiked it up to 88-89, and those K9's ran like scalded cats all day long. We passed scores of bikes that were really working pretty hard to run steady at 80. Seemed like most of them didn't have the heart for sustained speeds north of 85. Roger's 2016 330 K9 With the 124 S&S runs 3000 rpm at 90 mph, and of course my 117 is around 3K at 80---hard to tell with the Dakota Digital. Both have good 'harmonics' and were running smoothly at that speed.
Over dinner tonight Blacktopper pointed out that these bikes are made to run like that. Big Dog bikes are designed and engineered for that kind of sustained performance. They have the power and torque, they have the wheelbase and weight too, and of course they have a low center of gravity and excellent balance. They are road beasts.
Roger has a V-8 Chopper T-shirt that has a phrase that applies just as well to our Dogs:
To catch us, you gotta be good--
To run with us, you gotta be fast--
To pass us, you gotta be kidding!!

That is one area of the Country I haven't been to yet. Definitely on my bucket list to do some riding up there soon!

How was the temperatures...hell it must have been cool last Wednesday In Dallas we didn't even break 90 last week. Although I'm sure warmer than the AM up to the Grand Canyon...

Glad to hear you got that k9 out and running.

Have a safe ride home gentleman. Hopefully see you guys up at the BBBQ

It has been cool but comfortable the entire ride. Sturgis was generally with a low in the 50's and highs maybe touching 80. Warmer than our Westward Ho ride.
The terrain is magnificent and the entire area is filled with incredible rides. Because of family, I have been here other times than the Rally, and there are probably 20 of the 10 best rides in the country here. From Hot Springs and Custer to the Badlands over to Devils Tower, then on to Sheridan or Gilette. The ride from Billings to Red Lodge will change your life....Absolutely amazing. I don't know why folks wanna go anywhere but this country. Been doing this since I was 26 years old, and never tire of it.
The only day I didn't wear a leather jacket (except for around town) was Tuesday on the Big Dog Ride in Deadwood. We got caught in a bad rain squall on the way back from Rapid City. It was the only time ever that we actually stopped because of rain. Roger has to be careful with that 330 rear tire in heavy rain. Even cars were pulled over. No rain gear, open face helmet, and no place to hide. Standing on the side of I-90 dripping wet, shakin' like dogs shittin' peach pits (mountain rain is COLD) Only lasted 10 minutes. Of course when it let up, we rode on, and were in sunshine in less than 5 minutes, and back in Sturgis in 15.
You know the bikes love that cool weather.

I have been trying to figure that out myself. Seems there is a lot of people who spend lots of effort to travel overseas to foreign countries for "culture". While I have respect for that most of those people haven't experienced the culture in their own country unfortunately and missing out on its beauty.

With my limited riding trips to Finland, Sweden, Norway Denmark, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece , Croatia, Switzerland, UK, some east European countries that don't exist anymore, parts of USA, I would say different countries have different allures.

You've had the opportunity some of us never will.

My comment was not necessarily geared towards motorcycling, but just the fact that a lot of Americans are naive about the beauty in their country. Beauty exists everywhere, it's all in the eye of the beholder...or beerholder!

I totally agree Tapio. I have not traveled as extensively as you, and never lived in another country for more than a few months at a time, but have had long visits to several EU countries (Portugal, Greece, and Italy), Costa Rica, and I taught university classes in Paraguay in 2005, 2007, and will go again next month. I have seen the Acropolis, Herculenium, and Foz do Iguazu. Every country has its own charm and majesty. To say nothing of the wonderful people. Anyone who travels internationally cannot dislike humankind. There are very good people anywhere you go in the world.
But I'm never as happy as when touring the western United States. It's my culture and history.

You'd be welcome, Kel. I sure enjoyed getting to know you at Flint Oak. You know we ride a lot, and I think we ride pretty hard. Eric can vouch, that's about it. We ride, get ready to ride, or recover from riding. Can't recall the last time either one of us had a beer or smoked (anything), or visited a strip club, etc. But this results in better wifely support for our vagaries....both of ours are the best.
But if you want to go cross country on a beast motorcycle, stay tuned in, my friend. We're your boys.
