first spring start

howdy all you experts!!

this is my first spring with a big twin bike

previous was a HONDA Davidson 1100

so here is the story, my beast in the garage has been moved a few times this winter to prevent flats spots, but i haven't started her yet. it was just too stinking cold and didn't want to risk the extra wear and tear on a sub zero engine with super thick oil. so now that it has warmed up enough to be comfortable with the idea of starting her and the oil isn't sludge. battery tender all winter long

what are the recommendation for starting her up with minimum engine, starter and battery stress. i love my bike that earned me doug house time when i purchased her, but i don't want to ruin her first start of the year

Turn the gas on, give throttle a few twists and hit the start button, keep it idling around 1500 rpms until it idles on its own, then go for a ride

I would suggest that you give the throttle a couple twists, hit run/start, get it up to operating temperature. Everything should go fine if you put fuel stabilizer in it.

easy done, next winter add a little Sta-bil to it for the long sitting times

Yes That time of year is here. Going to be high sixty's today maybe even 70 in the northeast today. In a week or so maybe all the snow will be gone. I agree with everything said before, even though the tender was on all winter. I still hook a charger to it, for a few hours before hitting the start button. Now it's time to polish it up!

That is one of DOC's spring tips to put a deep charge into the battery, or when you fire it up, drive it for 30-45 minutes to give it a good charge <Dent

And DON'T forget to check the AIR PRESSURE before that first ride.

i know you've said you already cranked and rode it, but for the others that read this, another word of advice. if you have compression releases, which most all after '04 have, manually depress them to make it easier on the battery and the starter. don't always trust that the releases will act on their own.
