Back on topic -- you have the ability to do the correct action. REMOVE the cap, work the action manually, lube if needed, and then replace the cap. More work -- yes, but you're not damaging the protective cover.

Always worked for me.

I slit mine enough to lube and put a dab of silicone on it. I just peel that off to lube next time.
