I think it's time to replace the EHC

i have a 2008 EFI Mastiff. I've had some electrical gremlins from the day I bought it nearly 5 years ago. Had the bike looked at multiple times and the problem has never been diagnosed properly. The main issue I have is that occasionally when I turn the bike on the fuel pump will not energize. The bike will crank but not start. When it starts and I ride it, it will run great for a few miles then the engine light will blink on and the engine will stumble. If I'm on the gas I can keep it running. If I'm decelerating, it will likely die and then I have the starting issue. It seems after the bike cools down it will start properly.

The starting issue was intermittent. It might have happened 4 or five times a year the first 3 years, but would always start after I went through a bunch of diagnostics and maybe replaced a part. The engine light issue started a couple years ago, but was intermittent. My mechanic couldn't find it and suggested it was time to replace the EHC. The following has been done with no success.

1. Grounds inspected, cleaned and re tightened multiple times. Each time thinking this was the solution.
2. Relays replaced. Again thinking I fixed the issue. I have a bag of 10 and have replaced and likely thrown away 3 or 4 good ones that I was convinced had fixed the issue.
3. I've replaced the ignition switch. I now just switch between the 2 for fun so I can show my wife that I can fix the bike in 20 minutes!
4. I've replaced the circuit breaker so I can show the wife I can't fix the bike it 20 minutes, but that switching back to the original does!

I'm finally at the point I'm ready to buy a replacement EHC.

My options are:
1. Just buy another EHC from Curtis
2. Buy an RIP gen 2 kit.
3. Buy a DOC ESC kit.

I'm leaning towards option 3. DOC has helped me over the last couple years to try and diagnose this problem.

Thoughts or advice?

Hands down DOC. If your going to fix it then fix it completely. First Pitbull had hand control issues, WP esc and harness, had DOC build me a ESC. All glitches resolved. Bought a bull dog with a WP esc. Had DOC build me another one before issues occurred. No issues and piece of mind to look forward too. And jeffs customer service speaks for himself.

Around $600. He will instruct you how to water proof the harness and connections. Any issues Jeff will walk you thru it till it's 100%. Then also always be there to help you troubleshoot anything else that could be or goes wrong with anything thing else with the bike too. Worth every $. Guy knows his shit.

Oh and 100% plug and play altheway thru the harness. No cutting or splicing at all.

I was just curious.. my bike is hardwired.. no hassle with going that route. I spent about 300 on harness. And about 250 on controls, took me about 5 hours to install, of coarse I changed speedo and bars for personal likings, just was curious as to why more people don't go this Avenue of hardworking their dogs to eliminate any future problems. Was thinking maybe a few hundred every year wasn't enough to make people wanna convert. But at that price.. idk.. jmo humble opinion. Thanks for the response brother

You gotta change bars and speedo with that route so your in a few extra hundred for the speedometer.

I almost rewired it myself on the ridgeback but I would have just bought the same module that comes from RIP and Docs anyways. It will work with the stock controls right outta the box from Thunderheart except for high/low and Run/off. You need 2 separate relay for that It's about $300 on its own an extra $60 for relays. Then you need the JST connectors which aren't cheap. Your in it for $400+ anyways.

It would take me a full day to wire one up but it can be done.

I back tracked on mine, I installed the vintage Harley Controls on the factory bars and a cheap auto gauge, didn't care for the look so I got the drag bars and the Dakota digital and had to run the wires through that.. lol

I'd like to see you wire a bike in 5 hrs btw haha. Trying to organize and make it neat too in under 5hrs is quite a feat in my opinion. That's why RIP and Docs have it's benefits it's already prewired and in a loom so you just gotta tuck it away.

Save $ and time, Axel unit. All your controls will function plus you can modify some(nice feature). TWO year warranty. Drill one hole and connect two harnesses, and you are done!! I looked at all the options and went the Axel route. Spend the money you save on accessories.:oldthumbsup:

If you have a carb I agree go old school but if it's fuel injected you will also have to by a lot more parts and may wind up with more problems.

Idk, pulled my tank and rear fender off and just went to town, I chase and wire electrical all day so it wasn't much of a challenge. The longest thing was converting the connectors supplied to deutsch connectors.. my preference.
