saturday , wife and i rode bike to graduation of family friend. i had to sit in idle traffic WAY longer than i would have liked on bike. i got smoke comin out of exhaust when i finally got to move . first i thought it was fuel but kinda smelled like oil? it cleared up and rode 2 hours after without a hitch. anyone had anything similar. i have been told big inch motors dont like to idle long due to gettin hot , but what do you do? scared the hell outta me.

Had this happen to me last year, I got stuck in city traffic from a parade. Bike started blowing grey/blue smoke, and idling rough. I believe what happens is the oil gets so damn hot it breaks down and gets past the rings. I parked the bike for a few hours, and when I came back it was fine. Just change your oil, it's probably cooked. Since then I added an oil temp guage, and changed to synthetic.

Traffic is a no no on these bikes. You gotta run synthetic, I've heard the K&P filters help cool them a bit as do the cooler systems but fossil oil breaks down at 250, most synthetics are good way past that, more like 350-400 I think.

black = fuel
blue = oil
white = water -- guess we don't have to worry about that one. LOL

Have to agree with all the others, most likely oil. Good that it cleared out, but if you find yourself in situation like this, change the oil and filter at first opportunity. Good synthetic will be less prone to thermo breakdown but even if you stick with the dino, for most parts it will meet most situation.

If you find yourself stuck in traffic or a shut down, best thing to do is get over to the shoulder or a parking lot and shut her down and let it cool while you have a smoke or cold one. Also if it is something you can not avoid, try to find a side road that is less back-up to get the air flowing across so you can get it cooled down occasionally.

These V-Twins can take a hell of allot of abuse and high temps. Hell they ride them in Dubai and Kuwait and those temp can get ridiculus. Oil cooler may helop due to extra oil capacity and ability to drop temp more when air is flowing, not a whole lot of help when stuck other than may take longer to get the oil hot since there is more of it.
