REV HIT Accuracy

Before I purchased my 05 chopper last June I called the owne's local dealer (Chrome & Custom) to ask about the general care and condition of the bike. They told me the bike was always serviced on-time, well cared for, showed no rev hits, and only needed one recall (Pivot Bolt). I purchased the bike (1800 miles) and shortly after, I took it to Hannum's (Philly area ex. BDM dealer) to have the recall done. The tech told me the bike looked fine and showed me the print-out with no rev hits. Since then I've been the only rider and have never even yellow-lined it. It's been in the shop for over a month for the trans and I was told by the service manager that the forks were bent and needed to be replaced. I asked how that could happen and he said "as hard as you ride the bike, you should expect it". He was referring to numerous rev hits that were registered on the print out. I was annoyed because I never rev'd it. I began to think about it and is it possible there may be some type of speedo/tach, or Control Module error? I know I never red lined (or yellow lined it) and I saw the previous print out last August from Hannums. Also, when I got it, it had 1800 miles and now has 4500. That's also a little suspect, because I bought it last June and only drive it around the local area. The furthest I've ever been with it is to Mt. Pocono and back (to SJ). I didn't drive it at all this past winter. I really think the odometer reading is incorrect and the rev hits are definitely incorrect. Does anyone else seem to have more on the odometer then actual and/or recording false rev hits?

Sounds kinda fishy. I'v got lots of rev hits on my bike. They happen very fast and you hardley notice when they happen, at least I don't. I bet there are some hits on your bike too.

also the double post monsters are going to be all over you.:D

The rev hit counter is a hack. If you even brush it or for any reason the tach registers the redline then it will count a hit. I had like 3 hits on mine on my 1k service and I NEVER hit the limiter. I know what it sounds like on any motor and never touched it. But yet it had 3.

How many rev hits were they saying are showing? Also the hits will show but the most important part is how much time was spent in those hit cycles. You can get a hit from a missed shift, a quick rev while warming up, etc.

From my understanding it will record rev hits before actually hitting the rev limiter that Gas Man speaks of.

You may also check the accuracy of you speedometer by going against a measured distance, such as an isolated 2 mile straight stretch of road. If it is off, you can recalibrate yourself and though I do not have the procedure handy, I will gladly post them up later.

Forks bent sound strange for I would think that if you beat it enough or hit something hard enough to bend it, you would have known. Was there any handling issues?

RVH,

Another item on the RevHit is that it will record the hit when it passes that number (not sure but 5800 RPM was mentioned as a probable range), so if one was to get wild on the throttle while running it on a stand after say a oil change and cracked the throttle a couple of time, very good chance that 2 rev hit got recorded, (1 for each time the throttle was wrap up quickly).

Very possible to hit the spot quicker than some realize and only for a fraction of time, but still record it as a hit. Suggest that any time you have the bike in the shop and they do a print out to get a copy.

Exactly, Fibersnake - the rev hits may generate some attention, but the factory guys told me directly that the TIME above that RPM is their most critical indicator of abuse. Of course, that assumes there are not HUNDREDS of rev hits.

There is an actual rev LIMITER, which forces the bike to fire on only one cylindar, essentially forcing the RPM's to drop back down - and yes, it happens at a higher RPM than the rev hit RPM.

...Forks bent sound strange...
Clearly high RPM has no direct connection to bent forks - I presume the mechanic was just assuming that one type of abuse would lead him to believe there might be other types of abuse as well.

That still leaves the question of where all the rev hits are coming from. They can be generated with surprising ease via a poor shift or simple over-revving - I have a few, after 7000 miles - but it sure sounds like you have something else going on, JohnnyB. I would look carefully at the RPM printout from the dealer, and look at not only the rev hit count, but the distribution of the rest of the running time. Does it look normal? Most of the time is probably right around idle, and the rest should peak between 2500 and 3500.

TRUE COLORS COLLISION
LETS JUST SAY THE OTHER GUY WHO OWNED THE BIKE HAD A SPEEDO ISSUE AND THE SPEEDO WAS CHANGED DUE TO WARRANTY ISSUES,AND THAT PARTICULAR SHOP HE TOOK IT TO HAPPENED TO HAVE A SPEEDO LAYIN AROUND WITH LESS MILEAGE ON IT THEY SWITCH THE SPEEDO AND NOW YOUR BIKE LOOKS AS THOUGH IT HAS LESS MILEAGE,MAYBE HANNUMS IS NO LONGER AFFILIATED WITH THE BIKES FOR THE SIMPLE REASON THEY CANT READ A PRINTOUT PROPERLY OR GOT THEM MIXED UP SOME WAY OR THE OWNER OF THE BIKE WAS IN COHOOTS WITH HANNUMS...MANY DIFFERENT EXPLAINATIONS FOR HOW THIS HAPPENED..ARE YOU SURE WHAT YOU ARE READING ON THE PRINTOUT IS FROM YOUR BIKE...SOMEHOW SOMEWAY ONE OF THE TECHS WERE WRONG...ITS WHICH ONE IS THE DEDUCTION YOU NEED TO FIND OUT............AS P8RIOT ONCE SAID MAYBE THE TECH HIMSELF IS A NEOPHYTE.....................
