I got a problem with these "hardened" shafts. This oil pump shaft looks like my starter shaft did!Whoa Nellie!!
It's hard to tell from the pic, can you take one from further away just a little so we can see more of the whole area? What if you used a propane torch and carefully heated up the area it may loosen up enough to pry it out, that is the other end of the broken shaft right? So can you get to the other side and drill and tap into the broken shaft and use some type of puller to remove it while heating it up? I'm just throwing shit out there, this totally sucks ass Eric! I was hoping to see a Video of your bike idling with the 585 in it and you grinning from ear to ear!New problem key sheared off and the gear is stuck!
Gear key is at 12 the rest of is at 9 ...geeze
Anyone got any ideas how to get it off?

Tried a torch heated it as much as I'm comfortable with next to the crank bearing. Didn't help. It's hard to tell from the pic, can you take one from further away just a little so we can see more of the whole area? I've got a sawzall and a good blade...its a big one though. I am worried about controlling the depth of the blade it's not far from the case. That was my first thought.Yea a Sawzall with a good metal blade and cut the shaft right behind the gear, that should do the trick!
Good point, and if you can get something that will cut it better definitely use it, but cutting the shaft behind the gear is gonna be your best bet.I've got a sawzall and a good blade...its a big one though. I think an oscillating cut off tool will work better less aggressive and the blade only moves a few millimeters instead of over 1"

Q: does the broken shaft turn easily? Or is it seized up?You should listen to us old fucks.....Get the Ultima High Flow Oil Pump.... and save yourself a lot of grief...
Shaft does spin easily...yes.View attachment 37802 Q: does the broken shaft turn easily? Or is it seized up?
Easy does it with this job....I agree with a smaller and more precise tool. I have not used the tool you're talking about, tho.
I imagine the broken shaft sticking out it the rear is extremely difficult to drill bcs it is too hard and small and round. But if you could put a vice grip in front (clamped on the gear) to stabilize it and then drill a horizontal hole thru the shaft (where your last pic shows the vice grip), you might be able to slide a pin of some kind through there and get some wiggle room. Maybe enough to pry the shaft out towards the rear. At least you could get some leverage. But again, that shaft will be one hard SOB to drill.
I see where it spun 1/4 counterclockwise, but I remember from playing with mine, if the woodruff key is out, that gear freewheels and spins on the shaft. (See 79 and 81 above). Maybe it's bound up, and might pop loose? Again, you could put a vice Grip on the gear and maybe strike the the woodruff key groove with a machinist's hammer/chisel driving it clockwise...being careful not to tear up the lip of the shaft, because it wouldn't back out easily if it is misshapen.
Maybe re-install the cam drive gear to stabilize that front gear, and smack around the back end of the shaft to see if it might loosen up a bit? Or (sensibly) use a chisel on the groove for the woodruff key. I bet if you can create some wiggle room to get working, you might get that damn thing out of there. Of course unless that shaft as bad as the one in your photo...ouch.
Haha I'm listening bill! I'm going with the ultima but I gotta get this old one out first!!!You should listen to us old fucks.....
