Is your Dog cold blooded?

To start... this will probably be longer than needed... but sometimes a post just runs long.

So, I knew the bike needed a new battery... even when on the tender, I'd still have to ride it for a block or so, turn the ignition off and fire it back up for the odometer and even to get it to switch between it and the trip. But, after it had been sitting on the tender, I rode it to work one night. Go out in the morning and it didn't do anything... no lights came on or anything. Figured the "cold" (I live outside of Phoenix... I wear shorts year round, so it's hardly considered cold) had sapped the battery. Get it back to the house and plug it in and the light on the tender was solid. Hadn't even been hooked up for a minute, unhook it and it fires right up. Fine... whatever, I went and got a new battery for it.

New battery in and off the tender... started right up with no hesitation even after a few days. Go to ride it to work again and again in the morning, it didn't start.

But this time, the lights came on (everything except the headlight) and it even cranked over... so battery was plenty good. I figured that whatever caused the headlight to not come on, also caused a gap in the electrical system that told the bike to not start and that's why it would crank, but wouldn't light off.

Waited a few minutes with the key on while on the phone and the headlight kicked on. Turned the key off and waited another 5, turned the key on and everything looked good... bike fired right off. Ok... odd.

Ride a couple blocks and the bike dies on me. Turn the key off for a minute, back on and again all lights with exception to the headlight. Waited a few and finally the headlight came on and it starts right up. Made it the rest of the way home with no issues.

Didn't plug in the bike when I got home and didn't touch it for a week... turn the bike on and it fires on the first try.

Anyone else run into something like this? Like I said... the "cold" here is hardly cold. If I weren't wearing pants for the ride, I'd be in shorts (and still wore a t-shirt on the ride). But something about when it sits outside it just doesn't like it... but it's fine sitting in the garage even for a week.

Get rid of the ECH and your electrical gremlins will go with it. I had similar start up problems and replaced it with the ESC from DOC's, deadonecustoms.com, and if you go with his and have any questions, he will answer your call, immediately.:old2:
I haven't had any problems the last 2 years since I installed it.:whoop::chopper:

Its amazing how fortunate I must be. 2 Big Dogs. Both EHC bikes...electrical problems???? Only ones I caused and fixed without replacing the EHC.

"Knocking on wood"
Some are definitely more fortunate than others. My first K9's EHC went out around 24,000 miles. The second K9 around 10,000 miles. The Ridgeback is still going strong at 11,000 miles with the stock EHC and no issues, I have my choice EHC replacement upgrade ready to install when it gets really cold and I have some time to do so.

On the other hand, I work on a Big Dog in my area that has well above 40,000 miles with no EHC issues.

What you don't see on here is that the ESC or RIP2 failed cause they both use the same TH control module
What is it that big dog is using now? They sell used big dogs and install the RIP ehc on it before they sell em.. same as what the new dogs have.. I'm assuming an updated newer version of their old system??

I don't know which one is in the new or the old Dogs they sell, I do know its probably the same TH control module.
http://www.bigdogbiker.com/threads/ehc-replacement-poll.76925/

Out of the 88 that voted in the BDB poll 55 said they have replaced the EHC. I was told that the RIP was the the unit that BDM is putting in the new 2016.
Well where my curiosity comes from is from wanting to buy another dog but not wanting all the headaches everyone is talking about.. that's why my dog has none of the factory wiring or computers.. controls and all have been changed to avoid this headache everyone has and if they have created a new system that is good, I'd like to know about it ya dig..

:agree: Whole Hartley, as far as I know and what I was told by WSW the RIP is made by Thunder Heart the same unit put in HD made for BDM.

My bike is all straight wiring to a small fuse block.. the only thing with computer boards on my bike is my Dakota gauge cluster and the factory BDM signals and I haven't had any issues with that.. I really love big dog.. but I am scared of all the problems everyone always has.. but hands down the sickest production choppers ever made.. I'm just trying to do my research is all.. thanks a bunch
