Identifying a cam

I am going to need to remove a cylinder head or two. Need to change out the head gaskets. I might just cut the jugs down so that the piston is zero in the hole, to boost the compression. I've been told that the piston in relation to the deck, is considerably down. It's a 117 engine. 2006 K9. I'd like to get a handle on what cam is in the engine currently. I don't want to assume it is factory until I verify it. Is there an easy way and quick way to identify it, or do I have to remove the cam completely to identify it? Thanks.

Markings are usually on the cam, unfortunately your going to have to remove it.

Eric, did you get your new cam and if you did maybe chuck a pic up here to show the markings
Cam? WTF is that?

Stock BDM has standard BDM markings (shitload of numbers) on it don't need to remove it just remove the cam cover.

If it's aftermarket should see the lift clearly marked here is the 585

Regarding decking the heads search for post by John Sachs he's gone into detail a few times on what to do. I think the ideal combo is decking plus a thinner base gasket.

However you gotta make sure you dont boost it too much or you'll have issues with pump gas not being high enough octane. I know I've been stuck in places with only 87...like in Oklahoma.

Am I understanding this correctly? :oldconfused: Did you install a 585 in your bike? :oldconfused: Or is this just some random pic from the internet? :oldconfused: If you did, what about the "Lower MPG?" I thought that was a big NO WAY for you.

I remember back in the day when you and a guy we used to know named "Franco" would tell me, "Get the 585 cam Wanker!" You will not regret it! Well I hate to admit it, but since I have admitted a lot of things lately, I am gonna just say here and now, "You Wankers were Right!" :yesnod: Besides the ESC, which you also told me about,:old2: the 585 was the "Biggest Bang for the Buck" modification by far! :whoop:I Love that cam and it changed the whole bike, turned it from a everyday V-Twin, to a fire breathing, bad ass sounding, pull your arms off fucking ride! Hell yeaaaaaaaaaa! Whoooooooohoooooooooo!:whoop::chopper::old2::old2::old2::old2::old2::old2::old2::old2:

Yep should be good I won't have it done this weekend when the clip broke on the oil pump the key got jammed between the oil pump pinion gear and the oil pump drive gear. It kinda ate up the two gears a bit I ordered the replacement gears $60. What I didn't realize was that to take off the nut on the pinion shaft to replace that drive gear you need a special socket. Just ordered that on eBay last night.
