My Pitt died in traffic- was it hot, or was I out of gas?

easier way to check your ignition module on the same principle is to heat it up with a hair dryer or heat gun carefully...when it's hot, try and start the bike...

As to gas, ran out last Saturday ontop of a bridge....looked DOWN the bridge and wasn't i lucky...gas station.....pushed and FLINTSTONED and coasted down the bridge....I did the same thing as others, forgot to reset my odometer and thought I'm fine....however, my reserve is ALWAYS on due to a faulty petcock that I'm too lazy to replace....and I never knew that my tank actually held that much gas.....hahahahaha
If it's a pingel they will do a rebuild for 15 bucks. includes return shipping

I took the pit to the Lone Star Rally this weekend and at one point was stuck in traffic for about 20-25min where I moved maybe an eighth of a mile. I kept an eye on the oil temp and it got up to about 250 degrees. I know these bikes weren’t built for the local girl scout parade and have read a few stories about heating issues while in heavy traffic- so naturally I was getting concerned and started to look for a place to pull over. At the same time the bike just died. It was idling perfect and then died without warning. I turned the key off, waited a minute or two as I was still in the slow, but moving traffic, and she started right back up. Then as I’m eagle eyeing a place to turn her off and let it cool she died again about 2-3min later. I only tried twice to restart her as I didn’t want to run the battery down and then pushed her a short distance to a safe spot.

So at this point I’m off the road and out of harm’s way and sitting there wondering wtf happened. I started to think about the last time I got gas. I THOUGHT that I had gotten a full tank of gas about 8-10 days earlier and only ridden 3-5 miles and then forgotten to reset the trip meter, so on the way down to Galveston it said 126 miles and I reset it. Then the next day at 42 miles is when all this happened- so about 168miles total- this got me wondering if I simply ran out of fuel. Turned on the reserve and tried very briefly to fire it up- no dice.

So, I let it cool for about an hour and added half a gallon of fuel then she fired right up- not one hesitation. Then, I went straight to the gas station and put 3.5 gallons in her!- so basically put ~4 gallons in it when it was all said and done. My gas/odometer thoughts were obviously all wrong and my girlfriend who was on back at the time said to me with a sarcastic smile “you’re the biggest dipshit I’ve ever met if you’re out of gas- and if you are, it’s probably better you make some shit up and don’t tell me”. I laughed so hard I couldn’t see straight......partly because I know she’s right :oldlaugh: :oldfight: .

So, was I out of gas or did the heat cause it to die- or vice versa? Or was the low fuel just coincidental and the heat is what did it? I THOUGHT the ’08 Pitt held 4.5 gallons? That would mean I should have enough to at least idle without moving the bike around, no??

Flame suit on for the possibility I was out of gas at the biggest bike rally in the US with 4-500k other bikers and my girlfriend on back. Any comments I get are well deserved :oldbang:
I'm guilty ! I took a hot girl out for a ride and ran out of gas. She wasn't impressed lol. No worries!

Haha.. You guys are on fire tonight!

Pics will be forthcoming. I'm not good at taking pics of people just bikes. She was with me at strokers actually with Rick and Rodger. I only got a pic of the bike on the lift...maybe I need a selfie stick like Kevin?

Cdoggy is another good source for a selfie stick, he has one mounted on his handle bars that looks like an antenna when the phone isn't on it, Cdoggy is a trend setter. :old2::oldlaugh:
