My Pitt died in traffic- was it hot, or was I out of gas?

I took the pit to the Lone Star Rally this weekend and at one point was stuck in traffic for about 20-25min where I moved maybe an eighth of a mile. I kept an eye on the oil temp and it got up to about 250 degrees. I know these bikes weren’t built for the local girl scout parade and have read a few stories about heating issues while in heavy traffic- so naturally I was getting concerned and started to look for a place to pull over. At the same time the bike just died. It was idling perfect and then died without warning. I turned the key off, waited a minute or two as I was still in the slow, but moving traffic, and she started right back up. Then as I’m eagle eyeing a place to turn her off and let it cool she died again about 2-3min later. I only tried twice to restart her as I didn’t want to run the battery down and then pushed her a short distance to a safe spot.

So at this point I’m off the road and out of harm’s way and sitting there wondering wtf happened. I started to think about the last time I got gas. I THOUGHT that I had gotten a full tank of gas about 8-10 days earlier and only ridden 3-5 miles and then forgotten to reset the trip meter, so on the way down to Galveston it said 126 miles and I reset it. Then the next day at 42 miles is when all this happened- so about 168miles total- this got me wondering if I simply ran out of fuel. Turned on the reserve and tried very briefly to fire it up- no dice.

So, I let it cool for about an hour and added half a gallon of fuel then she fired right up- not one hesitation. Then, I went straight to the gas station and put 3.5 gallons in her!- so basically put ~4 gallons in it when it was all said and done. My gas/odometer thoughts were obviously all wrong and my girlfriend who was on back at the time said to me with a sarcastic smile “you’re the biggest dipshit I’ve ever met if you’re out of gas- and if you are, it’s probably better you make some shit up and don’t tell me”. I laughed so hard I couldn’t see straight......partly because I know she’s right :oldlaugh: :oldfight: .

So, was I out of gas or did the heat cause it to die- or vice versa? Or was the low fuel just coincidental and the heat is what did it? I THOUGHT the ’08 Pitt held 4.5 gallons? That would mean I should have enough to at least idle without moving the bike around, no??

Flame suit on for the possibility I was out of gas at the biggest bike rally in the US with 4-500k other bikers and my girlfriend on back. Any comments I get are well deserved :oldbang:

Well.. I went to the rally.. responded to ur post bout the rally being we are only a few minutes from each other.. I wish we woulda met up to ride together.. that woulda made my day.. I'll tell ya all about my deal with running out of gas after dropping about 200 into my bike to find out I was out of gas.. lol. I only saw two big dogs there, one was a put like urs.. black on chrome and the other was a chopper.. aside from my k9.. I'm assuming it wasn't u because this guy had no passenger sat night when I seen him

It's not hard to run out of gas especially without a gas gauge. It happened to me. Those big motors suck down some fuel. I just popped the reserve on and was on my way. Was your Pit sputtering as it killed or did it just straight up stop running? I know when I ran out of fuel, mine would sputter its ass off before it finally decided to kill. Not sure how an overheating scenario would make the bike act.

I was at a red light when I ran out and it didn't sputter or anything like that.. just shut off.. did exactly as he stated.. I thought it was a heat issue as well because it would start up and run for a min or so and then die again.. waited at a gas station for my wife to show up truck n ttailer.. her Durango gas light was on so I filled her up while we were there.. ya wanna talk about feeling l8ke an ass..

bahahahahahahah!! Holy shit, I feel better. :old2:

I literally didn't decide to ride down until about 7pm Friday night. I had decided NOT to ride it, then got home from work about 6pm and decided "f-it" and I rode down last minute by myself and my GF drove down later and met me there.

That may have been me you saw- I was only on it until about 7-730 pm though on Sat night and my GF was in her car at that point- so would have been me solo headed back to the hotel to put it up before things got outta control.

Gotcha, that wasn't me for sure. Sorry I missed you guys but again was a last minute decision. We'll get together soon.

No sputtering- just idling smoothly and then died.

Mine will spit and sputter for many miles before dying, ran out many, many times. I get such fluctuation in my miles per tank it is hard to judge (depending on how hard I'm riding it), if Sue is with me I seem to get a lot more miles to the tank.. don't know why..:D

Not long after I moved here to AZ I got stuck in traffic and the bike cut out due to heat... just died, didn't sputter or anything. Had to wait a few minutes for it to cool and caught an opening in traffic flow and took off without an issue.

Ahhhhh, there we go. So it WILL shut down suddenly due to heat alone. Well, I guess I have my answer. Appreciate that.

I'm off of Dixie Farm Road- east side of the freeway. I did take 45 and surprisingly hit zero traffic. Literally took me 25min door to door.

Take ur nose cone cover off and let it run and when ur ignition m9dule starts to heat up throw a cool rage on it.. I think ur module is fling out

easier way to check your ignition module on the same principle is to heat it up with a hair dryer or heat gun carefully...when it's hot, try and start the bike...

As to gas, ran out last Saturday ontop of a bridge....looked DOWN the bridge and wasn't i lucky...gas station.....pushed and FLINTSTONED and coasted down the bridge....I did the same thing as others, forgot to reset my odometer and thought I'm fine....however, my reserve is ALWAYS on due to a faulty petcock that I'm too lazy to replace....and I never knew that my tank actually held that much gas.....hahahahaha

Sounds like time for new video! " how to replace your fuel petcock" :yesnod: :oldlaugh: I Bet that would take less energy than pushing and Flintstoneing the darn scooter !!:whoop::oldhardlaugh::oldhardlaugh::oldhardlaugh:

Standing on traffic, engine running may cause a vapor lock too.
