Starting Issues

Guys,

Just wondering how quickly your battery drains when starting.

Was riding the bike all morning then had on a tender in the afternoon. I noticed the tender was reading about 80% which I thought was strange after already ridden during the day.

When I tried to take it out again I only got it started once (at full choke) and then it died after closing the choke. I attempted to start it a few times, but it just wouldn't fire.

Honestly, it's been awhile since I've had a bike with a carburetor and I've never owned a BG so I have no basis for comparison on starting. Seems weird I'd have to start on full choke here in San Diego (it's 90 degrees out) especially after riding a few hours ago, but it definitely needed it (and died when I went to half choke).

Right now the battery is back on the tender. The battery is brand new.

I'll check it next time I get it running. Stupid question, but how to I confirm the VR is charging the battery?

Tracking that - am I just looking for the voltage to rise once the bike is running to confirm the VR is working?

If you need enricher (choke) outside of Alaska or Finland in winter I wouldn't worry too much about battery !

It definitely won't start without choke. Is the carb out of whack?

That was my next question. It fired up no problem after battery on tender. Let it idle for a few min, but as soon as I closed the choke it died (even starts sputtering on half choke).

Go ahead and tell him Dent. If your battery and charging system is good and you carb is clean then go through the S&S carb set up. It sure helped me out.:old2:

Haha... I figured we were headed that direction. Maybe I should have the dealer do it, but may as well learn something from this.

I did understand the engine crancks, so the battery is at least somewhat OK. If it needs choke to run, maybe it doesn't get fuel. Dirt in tank? If you remove the fuel hose, do you get fuel? Dirt in carb...

It's an easy thing to do. Go to S&S website and watch the video a few times. Write down the steps and familiarize yourself with what's what. Then, just do it. You'll be fine.:old2:

Twist the throttle twice to add fuel into the carb. Many threads about not using the choke

I would say sputtering is probably a fuel issue , you just bought the bike, wonder how long the fuel sat in the tank? This may be stupid but have you checked to see how much gas is in the tank and what position your pet cock is in?

I'll check the tank and fuel. I know the fuel sat in it for awhile (the dealer acknowledged that), but supposedly they cleaned the tank and carb prior to delivery. I've also refueled it once (on the ride home). The pet cock is on run.

I have a 2011 mastiff carbureted. I do not use the enrichener even on cold days. When it is already warm from riding after a lunch stop I do not open throttle during cranking because this will dramatically increase compression during starting. Opening throttle during starting Will also be hard on the starter.
My battery is never on charger in riding season no problems.

All bikes are different but never use the enricher when warm. Turning the throttle will work on some bikes and not others. You just have to find the "Trick" that works for your bike. If I turn the throttle on my RoadStar it will never start...

If the tank is low and your pet cock is on run is may be too low to make it through the line. Which is why it may have to be on reserve setting ...

Just because the battery is new doesn't mean it's good, check the voltage when it's running and make sure the vr is charging the battery mine when idling is around 14 volts jumps up a bit when raise the rpms
Ya know my bike idles at about 12.6 and when riding goes to about 13.5 or so and has ever since I bought her.. she has a Dakota set up that shows me the voltage and so on.. haven't actually put a fluke on her to double check.. what would I have to do to get her to idle with 14 volts charging? Everyone I have spoke with says it's unique heard of on any kind of bike with a high performance engine..
