Stock jetting for 05 Chopper 117

Well now that I have my broken clutch carrier taken care of, I figured I'd do some exploratory surgery on the chopper. When I bought it it already had V&H big radius pipes, a stock type K&N air filter, S&S rocker boxes, and manual compression releases so I know some work was done but no idea if anything else.

So I pulled the carb today to find that the restrictor plates were opened up which I would have done if they weren't. I also opened up the carb to see what the jetting was seeing as I get backfire through the carb every once in a while and some deceleration pop, but I also cut most of the center of the baffle out and welded it together so I figure decel pop is normal. So I found it has a 72 main jet 295 intermediate jet and a 40 air bleed. From what I looked up I think that's stock jetting but wanted to ask to see if anyone knows for sure.

I also got a new cam cover gasket so I can see if it's still the stock cam or not, but waiting till I do an oil change to do that cause I assume oils gonna dump out anyway.

From looking on here most people are running at least a 31 intermediate, 50-60 air bleed and anywhere from 74-78 main. First time I checked the plugs they were a little light so I figured she was a little lean but when I just pulled to change to the E-3 they were a little sooty, so I'll have to get a couple sets and do some testing. Here's what they looked like when recently pulled.

For what its worth ! here is my suggestion !
Jetting and mains is related to temps and elevations ... that you have to figure out as to where you ride !
What is frequently over looked , SS motors are notorious for this ! Not sure how to explain or if you have already checked ? the carb mounts to a y pipe deal , at front of Y pipe are two gaskets to the intakes , take water in a spray bottle and spray each side while motor is running , if it starts to choke you have a intake leak at gasket .... you must replace and cure this as thats what makes backfires first before you get in to tuning and jetting .... I did this and did not replace with stock ones because they are shit to begin with , I found a set of hard urethane compound with no metal , I took them and used a dremel to make them fit snug , used a little permatex before tightening , and what a difference ! its time worth spent ! then calculated elevation and temps to where I ride ... no more problem with backfire unless I am really twisting on her ... and that I blame on the fuel today ... add in some fuel boost they love it !

Thanks, good info!
I'm right on the east coast so mainly sea level. And I ride as soon as it hits about 45-50 degrees in the mornings, and it can get up to 95 on hot days but usually in summer it's high 70's to high 80's. I was planning on checking for intake leaks as I did read that could be a cause but I always heard to spray brake cleaner or something and it it revs up there's a leak, never heard the water trick. I'll check for leaks and want to figure out what cams it has before messing with jetting. Just wanted to know if it was jetted when they did the restrictor plates, pipes and air filter like it should have been.

When the dealer installed my BR Vance and Hines it came with bigger jets. 31 inter and 74 main and they left the air bleed alone. Your plugs look on the lean side.
I installed the 585 cam and dual runner and bumped up to 32and 78, and if you follow S&S carb tuning tips it should really get you there.
I just recently bumped the inter to 33 because I was getting a sneeze thru the card running down the road between 2 and 3K RPM's, so I'll try that.

So chances are I'm still on the stock jetting, hmm. Guess I'll have to do se testing, order a few different size jets and unlock some more power then!

Yes its better to use brake cleaner for intake test LOL I tried water one day because I ran out of brake cleaner , made all kind of strange noises so I knew where to start , not sure if its the most effective way of testing ....but hey seemed to work for me

Got a bunch of jets coming from J&P tomorrow. Got a 31 and 32 intermediate, 74,76, and 78 main and a 50 for the air bleed. I'll test my intake to see if it's leaking and then start messing with the jets to see how she does.
