Ummm, or you could say that out of 55 Big Dog owners polled, 32 had changer the EHC for one reason or another. Which results in a 58% failure rate. Even assuming that half of the people that replaced did so out of caution rather than necessity, it looks a lot more like 29%. Kinda got me scared.Well, out of the 10000's of bikes built so far we have 32 failed/or just changed. At 32 per thousand that's a failure rate of .032 percent. Hopefully, we will get enough information to make an educated guess of the failure rate. This is a good thread.
Did the ehc cause the switch failure?I voted yes, but I would have voted yes 2 times if I could. I replaced it on my old 03. I re]laced it on my current 03. Just the other day it cut out a few times, then I went to use the left signal and the switch fell apart and the button fell out. It has no signal nor brake lights now. I have a bad feeling once I replace the switch, im going to be replacing ehc for 3rd time. If I were keeping the bike, it would be going old school by Namz.
Approximately 25K + big dogs have been built. I'm not sure which year models and builds actually have the EHC. That would be a good number to track down.Well, out of the 10000's of bikes built so far we have 32 failed/or just changed. At 32 per thousand that's a failure rate of .032 percent. Absolutly not. The switch shorting out probably caused the ehc to fry. The first 2 times it was a loose battery cable that caused the ehc to fry. All 3 times something else caused the ech to fry. BUT im tired if such a fragile system. If i can justify ditching the ehc for the cost (if i were keeping the bike) its a no brainer. Im with Bill on this one! I hate the ech setup. Old school and ride!Did the ehc cause the switch failure?
It's like any other poll. You take a sample and it usually works out that if you did everyone the numbers wouldn't change much. I suspect at 62% most BD owners have had trouble with the EHC. This poll may be slanted because a lot of members "could" have come here because of problems but I don't suspect they were all electrical.with that many bikes out there it would be interesting to see how many still have the original ehc , I'm not sure how many members there are on the forum but let's say there's 1000 that leaves 24,000 more big dog owners that we are not hearing from so to get an accurate numberis not possible, I joined the forum due to purchasing a big dog how many joined due to having a problem?
Just bought a Big Dog and found the forum while I was googling some random stuff about it.It's like any other poll. It would be interesting to have a poll on why you joined and list:
Wanted to find out more about the bike/bikes
Wanted to sell my bike/parts
Had electrical problem
Had engine problem
Had trans problem
Had brake problem
Had other problem
None of the above
It's hard to agree, only from my personal experience, that it's "finicky". Original EHC on my 2007 K-9 and I've been on some LONG trips with my bike.A better question is why wouldn't you? I've never understood why, when something is a common problem that can and more than likely will leave you stranded, it's not fixed prior. I owned a 6.0 power stroke that everyone had problems with except for a few nay Sayers. I personally don't have time to sit on the side of the road when and if. I did the egr delete and a new oil cooler. Magically with 200k miles I was never stranded. I get it there are a few that still run them. But who wants to deal with something so finicky? Must have 12.8v, must have grease, must be perfectly clean. That's fine if it rarely gets ridden or you're retired and have time to mess with it constantly. I want to know mine is going to start and have lights and function properly without having to deal with bs just to keep something simple working.
Wanker!!Original (dated 2005) EHC on my 06 K9... going strong.

Is it a misdiagnosed problem? Sure is. Do they fail? Sure they do. But I do understand your point, and even purchased a wireplus kit, which I sold a few years later because I never needed to use it.
Would I recommend not replacing an EHC as a preventive measure? Heck no, if you want to replace it, go for it.
I completely understand that.I can understand that. My problem is with two kids, wife, job that keeps me occupied, and the want for a bdm meant I have enough stress that i want my bike(stress release) to be stress free. No oil leaks, no starting problems, just a stress free ride to clear my head. Which I don't get to do often enough. I have a stress problem which is 99% mental I'm positive but the riding the dog cures it.
I've replaced the EHC on BOTH k-9'sLet's remove the guess work when it comes to EHC replacement. I'm very curious to see how many of us have replaced our EHC.
