Rear axle length / bolt end

Can anyone verify how far the axle should extend into the swingarm? Unlike axles that extend through the swingarm to accommodate a nut, big dog uses a bolt. I put coyote wheels on my mutt and the axle only rests in about 1/8" of the swingarm. I would think it should come in about 1/2" so the bolt and spacer nearly contacts the axle.

Ok, So I did my new guy post....really hoping to get a solid answer on how much axle should rest on the far side swingarm. The shop I take it to is saying an 1/8" is enough!!! My life depends on that rear axle carrying the weight of the bike, the driver, engine torque, and the rough ride at speed. I would think that axle should come through the full 1/2".

Hey Marky, that is the tolerance for the actual wheel adjustment. They want the wheel aligned straight within .125 .

Is it possible that you have bigger spacers on the new wheels? If the wheels are the same size, it should be fine.
Hm...interesting thought but the swing arm width hasn't changed. Unless he really jammed that thing in there.

When you torque down you should prob pull that axle through a little more. The bolt head will sit in the recessed area of the axle housing. So it can't be too long.

Even with bigger wheels, the axle length doesn't change...so unless he's using the coyote axle and that's a different size, only thing that should've changed is wheel spacers....unless the tire people jammed the original wheel spacers in and pushed the rear arms further out....

The entire axle should rest on the step up shoulder. Then your adjusting spacer. Then your bolt. Something is definitely not right. I would disassemble the rear and reassemble again taking measurements of everything.

I agree. 1/8" is a little scary....as stated earlier, if same axle is used, it should be the same as it was before.

I do agree that the swingarm width should not have changed.

I am using the original Mutt axle. Does make me wonder if the Coyote axle was a bit longer? However, like mentioned earlier, the swingarm shouldn't be any wider, so i don't understand why the axle would only come in a.m. 1/8"?

I can measure everything however I don't have the specs to compare against. Is there somewhere to get the spacer widths, axle length, distance between swingarm?

IF you are using the same spacers from your original tire, that would cause this issue, but you would've had to flex your axle in.....if the tire and hub are bigger, you need smaller spacers

You should be able to visually compare the axles and see if there is a difference....

I have tons of spacers for our dogs, but the manuals never say what size....

I really can't imagine you flexed your swing arm ..you would know it.

I don't think it's a spacer issue, do you have any free play in the spacers? Should have just a little free play before you tighten axle nut down. Basically spacers should spin freely.

If that's the case I'd spin the axle on tighten to 60ft lbs back off and remeasure.

08 manual calls for 45 ft lbs some earlier manuals are 60-65. Nobody had a clue why they changed it. That's why I suggest tighten to 60 to set the axle, back off, remeasure and then you can tighten to 45 if you like what you see

I DO agree with you, but he's using the SAME axle he had on the swing arms before....why would that axle be shorter now?

Correct, what is new, is the wheel and all three spacers, and the company that sent them to me could not verify if they were the correct set of spacers for the Coyote wheel. My last rear wheel was not a big dog wheel, therefore it had custom spacers to accommodate the standard offset.
