Outta Gas & Now Permanently SOL?

Got my used 2008 Mastiff--hoped / prayed it would be as good as I thot it was. It was better. Idle was perfect, great acceleration, smooth ride all the way around. Couldn't have been more thankful. Was going to make a Vegas to LA run and noticed the gas light popped on when I filled the tank. Probably the 4th - 5th refill I had done. Drove on, light went off after a few minutes. Off and on over next month or so--zero effect on how the bike ran that I could tell. Then, the check engine light would very briefly illuminate for a few seconds every couple of days. OK. Problem. Duh. Started to search the web and found this site. The very next day, like an idiot, I let it run out of gas. Right across the Strip from a station. Gas light came on for a millisecond before it quit stone dead. Got it filled, it kicked right off and ran almost exactly 2 miles. Gas light popped on and it instantly quit. Let it cool down, it started right up and ran exactly a mile to my apartment before same thing--gas light on for a half second and sudden silence. It turns over like a champ, but it seems to think it's on empty. So, now I have a two mile BD.
I've read some of the posts about the codes--I have an OBD-II reader for cars, so I'm familiar with the process. I've got ProTune II downloaded and I reviewed the manual from S&S. Got my USB-A to 5 pin mini-B cable ready, along with 9-pin serial cable just in case. Was hoping from the abundance of bike experience here maybe someone could shed some light on the deal. I've read a little about the thermistor and issues with it. Am I on the right track here, or......?

Is it fuel injected? If it is then there could be a lot more to it. The low fuel light is just an indicator and has no control over operation. Sounds like you might have a intermittent wire connection or short under the tank. How much fuel does it take when you fill up after the light comes ON?

Get the protune hooked up, and see what faults you have. Any light on the EHC?

Agree the fuel light is not the real issue, likely a symptom.

It is FI, yes. And now that I read what you're saying, it makes sense. When I looked in the tank, it looked dry--and obv I thot if I fill it, I'm set. So I don't know exactly, but it looked empty. But your point of the fuel light (and I would have to associate the thermistor as well?) have no control over starting is more than helpful. So, thank you for that.

2 for 2 that it's likely just a symptom helps a lot. I'll get PTune hooked up and see what faults it shows. Maybe I'll get lucky. And I'll see what lights I have on the EHC. I have a manual and read thru all that last night in the 'no start' troubleshooting guides. Thank you for the help, guys--I really appreciate it. Obv, I need all I can get.
