Free play in tranny

In regard to "06" K-9 and 1st gear free play. At the rear tire/fender I measured the rolling distance after it seemed that the play in first gear had increased. I checked all the usual stuff including the primary chain which was correct. The play is coming from the tranny. Baker says it can take up to a 1/4 rotation of the wheel before everything catches up. Mine is not that bad but what is normal? I have owned the bike since new and very familiar with it's quirks and it seems excessive to me. Has anyone checked the travel in first gear or be willing to and advise? It has been my experience the normal travel is around 1 1/2" Am I way off?

A quarter rotation of the rear wheel will give you close to 2 feet of travel. That seems really excessive.I just set on mine and put it in first gear and without getting real technical I would say about 2 inches of travel

Seems technical sit and push.

1/4 turn on the wheel or shaft? I think baker means the main shaft not a 1/4 turn of the wheel

I understand there is going to be backlash before everything gets tight. Mine just seems to have increased recently which concerns me. I measured mine in 1st gear by pushing it forward until it locked up and placed a piece of tape on the bottom of the tire in line with the edge of the fender. I then pushed it backwards and measured the travel. It measures at three-inches. like I indicated, I has seemed to increase recently, does not seem the same.

Good call Marc. If I were concerned about backlash that's where I would start.

IF everything on your chain is set correctly, per manual and play....the issue is somewhere else. IF it's only a problem in 1st gear, your clutch adjustment is okay, I'd pull clutch pack and check clutch hub nut....if the clutch hub nut is STARTING to unscrew, 1st gear is first.....or it could be a broken cog on your clutch pack......lol...just my .02
