Ridgeback Project

Energy One
Over the weekend I picked up a 2008 Ridgeback rolling chassis. Can't say enough good things about Derek and Donna(shovelheadkicker/bigdogpartskingpin). Very good people and we're great to deal with.

Frame is going to be blasted tmrw and then I'll start bolting things up before I powdercoat. Just wanted to ask what you guys would do if you were to start from scratch. What would you change or prefer different ? I'm looking for ideas in every aspect. Any thoughts ?!?

I have rebuilt mine from almost ground up at this point. Fundamentally, not sure I would choose much different other that using the new TH-MHC controler. I might consider different hand controls, something a little sleeker since I don't need Hi/lo and run/stop.

I definitely wouldn't add the stock hand controls with the computer boards in them. Waste of money and one more thing to go wrong down the line. The new dogs come with a jims tranny instead of baker, not sure if they're better or not though

Appreciate the advice. This frame has had the tranny plate mod to accept normal style transmissions. So a Jims may be the thought. I'll look into different controls.

124 would be nice. I choose the pitbull bars for a different look. Gonna go black for paint I think. Powdercoat guy keeps telling me there is gonna be a orange peel effect with black. Anyone know the truth to this ?

That's also what I read online. Not completely an orange peel but he says there will be some affect of it and that there's no way to get away from it. He has samples of he work that I'm gonna check out first before pulling trigger.

Orange peel is based on application and after application sanding and buffing. Anything from type of gun, nozzle, air pressure, type of clear, and habit of spray can cause or rid orange peel. Black paint can look like glass when sprayed right and prepped correctly.

Well he is just gonna to the blasting then until I find a professional. Anyone know of a good place around St. Louis ?

I have a black frame no orange peel.

Skip the baker DSSC and go with a Jim's like the new dogs or a baker Harley 6spd just not ours. The parts are easier to find and cheaper to replace. Starter is standard Harley and not propertiary. At some point us DSSC guys are gonna have a hard time finding starters, I think it was rumored Baker discontinued a part. So unless someone is lining up a manufacturer we are fairly limited. same can be said with clutch more options!

I also would go with some nice Harley switches too and forgo the PCB boards hand controls no need to use them. They look sleek but not cheap and the housings are expensive. Although that's not gonna work with your pitbull bars. Will need Harley bars which is good too gives you unlimited grip and peg options.

The DSSC is one of my favorite parts. I hear you though.

I am not a baker fan after what I went through having to have my trans rebuilt at 17k.

I wish there was an alternative without the hump back primary.

It looks great but it's not a superior product to others and with limited options and replacement parts I don't know why anyone would install it.

Any problem leaving the frame set inside garage for awhile after its been blasted ? Has surface rust and a few spots are pitted. I would like it to be cleaned up at least.

I wouldn't, whoever you find to powder coat is going to want to clean it again. Rust will come right back in a couple weeks.
