Gas tank venting

Because the high pressure in the tank was creating a vacuum not allowing the gas to actually leave the tank to fill the carb.

Think about your plastic lawnmower gas can in the shed. When the air hole on the opposite end of the spicket is closed it barely dribbles out when your trying to fill your mower. Take you an hour to get a pint out.

Pressure always has to remain equalized as gas leaves your tank air fills it up.

Do what? How can a vacuum be present under pressure? If there is pressure on the tank and you pulled the hose off it would shoot gas across the room.

The way I read it , he pulled the gas cap off, not the fuel line. You're absolutely right about pulling the hose off under pressure. That'll make a big mess! I wish I could think of a better way to explain my thinking,:oldconfused::cheers:

He mislead you stating it released pressure. He assumed it was air escaping but it was actually drawing it in. When he released the gas cap the noise was air going in at a fast rate not escaping.

negative pressure was present in the tank. When the gas cap isn't venting it you will drop below 14.7PSI atmospheric pressure.

Gas cap only allows air in not out.

Sorry Frank - I shouldn't have used the words 'High Pressure' I meant negative pressure as I went on to say vacuum. My apologies that is probably what confused you.

Yes, he DID mislead. Considering the way the one way valve operates on the cap, now this whole shit storm makes perfect sense.
