Knocking and Pinging

I'm having problems with knocking and pinging with my 2007 K9. I've done no engine mods and have 8500 miles on the bike. When the bike starts up no problems, after riding 30 minutes or so the knocking begins and seems to continue more pronounced as the trip get longer. I was hoping to get advise on what troubleshooting, replacements parts and advise I can get. I've been reading up on the forum with mixed results. Is it the ignition and fuel mixture? Is it the cam (do I need a 585)? Both? I usually run 91 - 93 with the same result. Any ideas, forum links or help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a novice when it comes to this stuff..

I hear it at idle. For example at a red light after running 30 or more minutes. I haven't paid attention when in gear/speed or which gear/speed it may be so I'm not very helpful with that information. Should I capture that info?

Are you hearing pinging at idle or is it the valves tapping? maybe you need to adjust the push rods, it made it a lot quieter when I installed the 585 because I adjusted the push rods after 10K for the first time.
I think its valves tapping if its at idle.

Good question on the vales tapping. I don't know what values tapping sound like (any U-tube to point me too?). I think I'll try the simple stuff first like adding some octane boost to see if it does anything. After that if it still happening (and judging from this forum it will) I'll swap out the ignition to the Thunder Heart. Then, replace the cam..

Add an octane booster so you know if it's fuel or ign. Still there, ignition problem to carbon buildup due to a higher compression.
When I blew a base gasket I pulled the heads off and there was alot of carbon build up on the pistons and heads, I cleaned it all off and pinging was gone! Coarse I installed a 585 cam and increased my main jet from a 74 to a 78, so I am sure that at least one of those things took care of it! Lol! :oldlaugh: :old2:

Tony, I have never heard of anything pinging at idle, I might be wrong but I don't think it's possible, I think your hearing the rocker arms and valves not pinging! Sven, what cha think???? :oldconfused:

back to basics; if you are getting gas at a station with only one hose for all grades instead of a hose for each grade, think about if the last person to get gas from that pump was driving a little honda civic. he got 87 octane and there is still about a gallon to a gallon and a half of that piss still in the line, but you pushed the 93 octane button. you are getting maybe 3.5 gallons of gas to fill up your tank. guess what!!!!!! if you are lucky, you may end up with 89/90 octane at best. look around for a station that has a hose for each octane and get what you are paying for.

BUT,,, it ain't gonna hurt anything to go ahead and adjust the pushrods.

Has only been happening for the past 6 months or so.
Ignition:
I'm with cdogg on this. Ping at idle would not come in 30 minutes after starting, warm up, running that long, now it pings? No. It would be ignition if say you had excessive heat coming off the engine. Idling at a light would be worse. So you are not complaining about heat, nor have you mentioned it is hard starting = Not Ignition.

30 minute window and 6 months it started with this tick/knock:
I agree with the rest of the input. 30 minutes in you start hearing noise? You'd think a failed lifter not holding pressure would knock on startup. Heats a different story. 30min in and it idles so no valve is tight it keeps the valve(s) open. No rocker chatter upon startup where it's too loose. No cold knocking, but some 30 minute range this is now on the raggedge of ticking at idle? Piston knock would sort of knock the small end of the rod against the wrist pin. It has to stop at top dead center so when it goes down it ticks, swings back up from bottom dead center, and as it comes around and ticks again you hear both ticks. Only thing is, rod out of tolerance is going to get louder 6 months goes by = Bottom or top end noise is to video a cold start and let it idle. Warm it up until it makes noise, where you'd try to find the loudest area you think it's coming from and video that area.

Plugs:
Where are the 3mo old plugs? Look at those and describe them or pull the new plugs and note who is not matching each other, etc.

might not be this but since you service the bike yourself are you using the correct oil filter?
Harley twin cam oil filters are too restrictive.

Paul.
I just started doing my own maintenance last spring cause my dude went tits up unfortunately.. I was bummed out.. Tried to get a new mech but afters several attempts and lots of lost $$ realized that some just try to rip you off. Started out with standard stuff like oil change, spark plugs and wires, etc.. Then EHC went tits up and I had to install DOC's ESC...

Actually I think that is exactly the oil filter I have. I didn't think a frigging oil filter made much of a difference. I feel so stupid.. Any recommended filters?
